New Billy Idol Song- Drafting With Myself O- Oh

There was a time when I was, shall we say, overfascinated by fantasy baseball. During the off season, I would run 15 team 30 round drafts, and not invite anybody. After doing one of these 'self-drafts' once a day, every day for some weeks, I tired of the exercise.
During the routine, I got to know my own adp really well though. But started questioning as to whether it was a good thing or not. Adp is used differently depending on the drafter.

Since then, I've come up with other ways to self draft that are a little tedious, less time consuming, and a little bit more fun.
Positional drafting is the game I'm playing now. I'll show you how it works.

Let's put together a team now.
Here are the rules:
We must pick by position.
Catchers
Corners
Middle
Outfield (utility if not used on corners or middle)
Closers
Starters

23 rounds
Not only do we need by position first, but the draft pick cannot exceed current NFBC adp.
For example, I'll start out at Catcher and I want to pick Lucroy. Lucroy is adp #131.
So I have my first catcher and am through with my 9th round pick
I'll take Doumit next. Doumit is #169. A 12th rounder.
So I start out:

C- Lucroy (9th round)
C- Doumit (12th round)

From doing this previously, I know I have to cheat some of the earlier positions, knowing the heavy hitters in Outfield and Starters are last. I'll start doing that at 1b by taking Billy Butler. He's not Pujols, Votto, or Fielder, but doesn't cost me a first rounder. At adp #47, he's my 4th round pick. It is here where I have to decide to take a corner at 1b. I will this time and take Cuddyer at #164, 11th round
At 2b, I'll take Brandon Phillips at # 62, a fifth rounder.
At 3b, I'll go big and take my first rounder in Cabrera
At ss, I have to take my middle as well. I'll go with the power and speed of Hardy and Segura, #205 & 256, a 14th and 18th
So, going into 'the big guys', my team looks like this

C- Lucroy (9)
C- Doumit (12)
1B- Butler (4)
2B- Phillips (5)
3B- Cabrera (1)
SS- Hardy (14)
CI- Cuddyer (11)
MI- Segura (18)

And done with rounds 1,4,5,9,11,12,14,18

It is here that I start looking at adp first to field the rest of my team. For outfielders and utility we can go front to back or back to front. I'll go back to front.

At #312, round 21 Will Venable
At #293, round 20 Brandon Moss
At #195, round 13 Dexter Fowler
At # 112, round 8 Carlos Beltran
At # 99, round 7 Mark Trumbo
At # 33, round 3 Jacoby Ellsbury

This gives me an offense of:

C- Lucroy (9)
C- Doumit (12)
1B- Butler (4)
2B- Phillips (5)
3B- Cabrera (1)
SS- Hardy (14)
CI- Cuddyer (11)
MI- Segura (18)
OF- Ellsbury (3)
OF- Trumbo (7)
Of Beltran (8)
OF- Fowler (13)
OF- Moss (20)
OF- Venable (21)

We have rounds 2, 6, 10, 15, 16, 17, 19, 22, 23 left, so I know pitching may be cheated a bit

We'll go Rivera at #136, round 10 and League #217, round 15.

Giving us rounds 2, 6, 16, 17, 19, 22, 23 for our Starters
Working front to back...

Round 2- David Price #27
Round 6- James Shields #78
Round 16- Matt Harrison #233
Round 17- Josh Beckett #241
Round 19- Brandon McCarthy #275
Round 22- Chris Tillman #323
Round 23- Johan Santana #334

And, we have a finished product-

C- Lucroy (9)
C- Doumit (12)
1B- Butler (4)
2B- Phillips (5)
3B- Cabrera (1)
SS- Hardy (14)
CI- Cuddyer (11)
MI- Segura (18)
OF- Ellsbury (3)
OF- Trumbo (7)
Of- Beltran (8)
OF- Fowler (13)
OF- Moss (20)
OF- Venable (21)
SP- Price (2)
SP- Shields (6)
SP- Harrison (16)
SP- Beckett (17)
SP- McCarthy (19)
SP- Tillman (22)
SP- Santana (23)
CL-Rivera (10)
CL League (15)

For the most part, these players were randomly selected, so don't discern a like or dislike I have for players picked or players passed.
Before drafting, I do this exercise every time. It keeps me familiar with adp in how long I should wait or not wait for players I like. And more importantly, reminds myself that no matter what, there are going to be holes somewhere or a position that is 'short'.
For this team, it was pitching.
Anyway, hope you try and enjoy it.

Doughy, we've gone over this before, it's called mocksterbation and contrary to what Mom's say, you won't go blind.
