In this exercise, we can be one of three picks.
1-5
5-10
11-15

If one through five, build your best 'starting six' within the perameters of your draft position.

1ST Round is anybody, so I'll select Braun.
2nd Round, I have a choice of Wright, Headley, Gonzalez, Pedroia, and Castro
So, I'll select Wright.
Third round, Heyward, Harper, Jones, Bruce, and Kinsler
I'll take Kinsler and go the 75/75 route for this team
Fourth round, Choo, Kimbrel, Bumgarner, Ramirez, and Molina
Wanting to get pitching in and since Closers are not yet fully known yet, I'll take Kimbrel
Fifth round, Mauer, Phillips, Rollins, Halladay, and Jennings
I'll stay with the balanced offense and take Phillips
Sixth Round, Moore, Andrus, Freeman, Gordon, Trumbo
And I better grab a Starter and take Moore.

Braun, Wright, Kinsler, Kimbrel, Phillips, and Moore.
Like said, you can do this for every part of the round. It gauges who to expect to be there at a certain pick and what we could do before the draft.
I like comparing 'My' team with other teams drafted to see how I measured up as well.
Again, don't take these pllayers as players I liked, or the one's passed as disliked, mostly just a show and tell.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

As I recall Dan you've been an early closer guy the last couple of years. I grabbed Kimbrall in the 7th round in one league last year and was very glad I did. Where he's going this year is just to high for me. I'd love to have him but he's going to have to drop to me.

Nice exercise, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Joe.
You're sort of right. Early in the drafting season, early, I like well established Closers more than than say, when the Main Draft comes.
Kimbrel will go in the 3rd and 4th rounds during early drafts. He has a job and is the best at it right now.
Papelbon and Motte have been trailing him by a round or two.
Like last year, the closer to the season we get, the more Kimbrel falls. In this last draft shown, he's fallen to the bottom of the 4th.
By Main Event time, he'll most likely be going in the bottom of the 5th or top of the 6th. Nothing has changed with Kimbrel during that time, but it becomes clearer to drafters who his 29 counterparts are.

The beginning of the off season is a horrible time to draft Closers. Almost half the Closers have not been 'named' Closers by their managers and their is a carousel of movement.
Early Drew Storen drafters took a kick to the nuts with the Rafael Soriano signing. Andrew Bailey owners now have little to look at. Some didn't believe the Reds would make Chapman a Starter. It all conspires to make Kimbrel a good, early pick.
But as each situation gets clearer, it drops Kimbrel down a bit more along with Papelbon and Motte this year.
It's become a natural progression.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Back when I did straight drafts and not doing auctions exclusively, I did a variation of what you are doing. I would take an ADP list or actual league drafting list. I would normally do three different self drafts against those list. One from the 4th spot, one from the 8th spot and one from the 12th. Once I got my position

I was allowed to draft any remaining player. If drafting from the middle, I would cross off the 1st 7 ADP picks and then select. I would then cross off my pick and the next several picks until it was my turn. I would account for when my pick was actually selected assuming he was before I selected again. This way I could get drafts from the front, middle and back of a single ADP list. As the draft progressed, I could find instances when I got the same player in all three "leagues". One of these drafts take less than 30 minutes and does give you a good example of where players fall.

Once I got my actual draft position, I would do several drafts against several lists using that position.
