Traditional and Non-Traditional KDS

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:17 am

Chad Schroeder is in favor of not getting our draft pick position and leagues till right before draft time for the Main Event. It's interesting. I've given the main reason why I oppose this measure under the top subject line in that I love getting our leagues and draft picks the week before because of the buzz it creates. It brings our whole NFBC community together. A little like a town hall meeting.
It's great stuff.
But, I have to admit I have a personal agenda as well. Especially this year. This is the 10th anniversary of the NFBC and if playing 'live' that first weekend, we must be in Vegas. This almost guarantees that most NFBC players will be there.
And dammit, I want to meet as many folks as possible. I don't want that greet and meet to be cluttered by picking leagues and draft spots before drafts. Changing this and doing it for the first time would take a lot of time away from us to do as we please on draft day. Whether this is a last minute wrap up of study or meeting and greeting.
So, I'm hoping that this proposition sucks wind.

Fiddling with some time honored NFBC rules and standards has gotten me to think about something we can do with KDS though.
What if KDS were shelved?
The first person drawn out of a hat for each league was number one, second, number two, etc...you know like the old days. But here's the catch and here's how the facilitator would handle the first round:

Facilitator: Number one, do you choose to pick or pass?

Number one: I pick Ryan Braun.

Facilitator: Number two, pick or pass?

Number two: I pick Mike Trout.

Facilitator: Number three, pick or pass?

Number three: I pick Miguel Cabrera

Facilitator: Number four, pick or pass?

Number Four: I pick Robinson Cano.

Facilitator: Number Five, pick or pass

Number Five: I pass

Facilitator: Number six, pick or pass?

Number six: I'll take Matt Kemp

Facilitator: Number five, again, pick or pass?

Number Five: Pass

Facilitator: Number Seven, pick or pass?

Number seven: Pass

Facilitator: Number Eight, pick or pass?

Number Eight: Joey Votto.

Facilitator: Number Five, pick or pass?

Number Five: Pass

Facilitator: Number Seven, pick or pass?

Number Seven: I'll pick now and take Albert Pujols

And it would go on like that through the first round. Once you have picked and not passed, you have established your draft number for the draft.
This method would be intriguing in many ways.
We have the unknown that Chad craves. While we would KNOW the pick a week ahead of time, except for number one, we really wouldn't KNOW when we're picking.
If we liked McCutchen, Stanton, and CarGo in the first round and none were picked in this example, team five could have the option of passing and hoping for two of the three or picking who he feels is the best of the three at a certain point in the draft.
And although we're the number seven drafter, there's a chance we can get a higher player we covet. Etc. for other drafters.
I've shared this idea with another person and he asked what if four 'passers' have passed and we're at the 15th pick?
The team with the highest priority would still be asked 'pick or pass'. If all pass. then team 15 would have to pick in the 12th spot rinse and repeat.
It's just an idea that would open new possibilities.
Really, I can take or leave this idea. I like the way things are. But, for those looking for something new, an option.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
