Week Three Recap and Stuff

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Apr 22, 2013 10:00 am

I'm not a Numerish guy. (Hey Wayne, another word for your dictionary!). But I do like numbers and stats and occasionally I'll take a trip to Numerland, if only to pick up more of the language.
For those of you who drafted Adam Dunn, hoping for the home runs, while absorbing the loss of average...condolensces.
Remember 2011? You know, the year where even Dunn hit below Dunn-like averages and a puny 11 homers?
He is on his way to that type of year again. And it's not just the two homers or the dollar store total cost of an item after tax batting average of .108
Nope, it's the Numerish of how many pitches he will see during an at bat. Since 2005, Dunn has finished in the top 20 of 'pitches seen' every year except two.
2011 and this year.
Dunn is riding an eight game strike out streak. With 26 strike outs in 17 games, he is well on his way to setting a new strike out record. The problem being, that he won't get the chance. He'll be benched soon. Then benched again for longer periods.
As I've said before, it's not the strike outs that get players benched, it's what they do with the rest of their at bats.
Adam Dunn is a perennial top 20 player in pitches seen because it takes a lot of pitches to walk and strike out.
Both, are Dunn specialties.
Not this year.
This year, Dunn has drawn three walks.
Maybe he changed his approach to be more aggressive or maybe pitchers have decided that if they throw strikes to Dunn, the odds are in their favor that he won't hit it.
Any which way, we don't have to speak Numerish to know that Dunn sucks.
His on base percentage is .159....coincidentally matching his batting average from 2011.
Dropping him now in FAAB leagues and letting others spend big money on him and then absorb the batting average is a very, very viable option.

It is April 23 and there are only two players that are hitting over .400
Makes one appreciate those players that hit .400 over a full season.
Have to be named 'Chris' to hit .400. Only Johnson and Davis are hitting that high.

'Bucking the odds', JP Arencibia has as many homers as John Buck....only with a lot less fanfare.

Carlos Santana owners should root for Mark Reynolds to hit a homer. Santana has four homers. In each of those games with a homer, Reynolds has homered also.

Justin Upton leads baseball with nine homers. Eight solo's and one with a runner on base.
He has just three other rbi.
13 rbi. 13 extra base hits.
I think I've found Upton's weakness.
He can't hit pitchers that are throwing from the stretch!
Upton is riding a six game strike out streak.

Didi Gregorius has as many homers as Miguel Cabrera.
Didi Conn starred in 'Grease'
Like Conn, Gregorius will likely be trivia to Cabrera's Travolta by the end of the year.

Roberto Hernandez did something yesterday that Fausto Carmona has not done in a long time.
Win a game.

The Cincinnati Reds lead the National League Central.
The Cincinnati Reds have one road win.

When drafting Brandon McCarthy, owners were hoping he'd stay healthy.
McCarthy is giving up close to two hits per inning.
Now that he's healthy, his owners would like to kill him.

6.86 ERA
1.88 WHIP
0 Wins
Less than five k's per start.
Josh Johnson may as well be pitching in Miami....

Speaking of Jays Starters, some are saying that RA Dickey isn't having a good year.
Depends who is doing the talking.
Dickey's ERA is 4.30
Last year it was 2.73
So, bad, right?
Not so bad when knowing that Dickey is the only Jays Starter with an ERA under five.
LOVE those paper teams!

You, I, Cy Young, and David Price all have something in common.
None of us have won an MLB game this year....

Mat Latos has started four games this year.
He has zero wins...and zero losses...

There have been 47 'De La Rosa's' involved with professional baseball.
47.
De LaRosa means 'Of the Rose'
Not one of these De La Rosa's faced Pete Rose....
HEY! They can't all be gems! And this is free, so shuddup!

There have been nine complete games this year.
100 years from now, this will become an offensive statistic and not a pitchers stat.
Kevin Youkilis averages 60 complete games a year....
Yeah, I made that up....

Doug Fister leads baseball in hitting six batters with pitches.
I'll bet you can't name one of them.
Zack Greinke has hit one.
You're way ahead of me......

Greg Holland has five Saves this year.
Got two yesterday.
Kelvin Herrera was soooo last week.

Adam Wainwright did something no other Major League pitcher has done in starting the year with 28 K's and zero walks.
JP Arencibia gets no mention for doing almost the same thing offensively. He has 28 K's and one walk.

BJ Upton is batting .000 when hitting any other place in the batting order but the leadoff spot.
This is just slightly below what Upton hits in the leadoff spot.
Upton has two two-strike hits this year.

Jose Altuve and Giancarlo (still not use to that hideous baseball player's name) Stanton have something in common.
They are a de la rosa in a weed field.
Both can be great. Both have a crappy team to play with.
Unlike Stanton, Altuve is playing great.
He is hitting .370....Has five extra base hits, including a homer...two stolen bases....27 hits....Eight walks
All that, and he has scored eight runs...Way to go Astros!

By the way, Altuve is far and away the Astros most productive hitter....
Why in the world would you bat him after your pitcher hits?
C'mon Management! Think outside of your little box!

I thought Bryce Harper would lead baseball in homers for a lot of years starting in 2014.
I may have been off by a year....

Shin-Soo Choo has been hit by nine pitches already this year.
No other player has been hit more than four times.
Mr. Choo would like me to remind pitchers that he is from SOUTH Korea, not North....

In just seven games, Kyle Blanks has run into a wall, had an awkward slide, and been hit by three pitches
Some players are a disabled lists bitch....

Yes, we noticed you missed a game Mrs. Youkilis....

Before the season, somebody(s) over drafted Jedd Gyorko, reckoning that he had the potential to hit 30 homers and drive in 100 runs.
Perhaps, he wrote this song (to be sung in Beverly Hillbillies style)

'Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Jedd,
Poor Padre'er barely keeping his owners fed;
Then one day Jedd was looking to keep from getting boo'ed,
And up from his bat, he finally hit one off a dude;
A homer that is. Bat Gold. Texas Seed.

Well, the first thing you know ol' Jedd's a Millionaire,
His Drafters yelled, Jedd hit a pair!
They said, 'Californy is the place to be,
So he loaded up his bat, and he hit three;
Homers that is. In the pools. To the Stars.'

Keep that dream alive, Jedd.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Like every kid, I had a crush on Elly Mae Clampett. Got jealous every time Jethro would bring home one of his 'big time producer acting stars' that courted Elly Mae.
Although she was obviously one of the most beautiful girls on tv at the time, I was equally impressed by her arm in the Leo Durocher episode when Durocher was trying to get Jethro to play for the Dodgers.
Loved the cameo's by Dodger players in the 60's.
We'd see Don Drysdale trying to talk Greg out of getting such a big head about his pitching abilities in the' Brady Bunch' or Duke Snider as a 'bad guy' on the 'Rifleman' and several others.
Durocher seemed to make the most out of the gigs though. I seem to remember him on 'The Munsters' and other shows as well.

Good stuff, all.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Well, he wasn't a Dodger. Still, let's not forget the most famous Brady Bunch guest appearance. :D
