Weird Stats and Some MVP Stuff

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Apr 24, 2013 12:20 pm

I'm a fan of weird stats and Michael Young set a hitting streak record yesterday that may never be topped.
First, Young has a 14 game hitting streak. Sounds impressive, but his fantasy owners know that they haven't reaped much from this streak.
It may be because of the record that Young has set.....
During the last 12 games of Young's streak, he has had one hit in each of them AND that hit has always been a single.
Something to watch for in the game tonight.

Yesterday, the Upton Bros. went back to back in hitting homers. The only other Brothers combo to do that is Paul and Lloyd Waner, 'Big and Little Poison'.
The Braves had had six brother combo's during the current era-
The Aaron's, the Upton's, the Niekro's, the Drew's, the Mahler's, and the Torre's.
The Drew's were JD and Tim....

Five years in a row during the late 50's and early 60's, Mickey Mantle either won MVP or finished a close second...
Maybe even more impressive...
Yogi Berra had a 10 year stretch where he won MVP three times and finished no worse than fourth in the voting TEN years in a row.

Lou Gehrig won the Triple Crown in 1934 with 49 homers, 165 rbi, and a .363 batting average.
Did he win the MVP?
Nope.
Lou Gehrig was the ultimate 'take it for granted' player.
The MVP went to Mickey Cochrane.
Cochrane's stats?
Two homers, 76 rbi, and a .320 batting average.

What is really funny is that Gehrig didn't even finish second or third.
In fact, his own teammate, Lefty Gomez finished third.
Can you imagine a Triple Crown winner finishing so low in MVP voting and to a player with lowly stats such as Cochrane's?
Cochrane was thought to be the best defensive catcher in baseball. He also Managed the Tigers to a pennant that year.
He was their undisputed leader and writers thought that more important than sheer numbers.
Obviously.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
