Why do we do it?
We ask ourselves this question repeatedly as the season goes on.
That question is, why do we draft that guy for his skill set in one or even two categories, knowing he'll screw us in all others?
Most judys fall into this category.
Dee Gordon was highly bid on in faab. Adam Dunn gets over drafted every year.
BJ Upton could be the poster boy.
We love a mix of speed and power. And after we draft a guy like Upton, we dream of a possible 40/40 season.
Forgetting that the 40/40 may be closer to 40 hits and walks rather than 40 homers and steals.
We'll tell ourselves that we can afford a guy like this. That there are 13 other guys in our lineup that can carry batting average.
But then the season begins.
And realization strikes as we see day to day stats, that a guy like Dunn, Upton, and Gordon, are just plain depressing.
We start expecting 0 fer 4's.And worse, we can't bench them. When we bench them, fantasy Gods have their way with us and that is when a guy like Dunn has a two homer, five rbi game.
The Braves set the off season talking heads into a frenzy with the acquiring of the Upton Brothers. Not one, said they would perform like the Aarons. With Justin taking the role of Hank, BJ playing like Tommie.
Not one.
Most of what they said was pre-jiz in their enthusiasm over what could/would be.
BJ Upton has not had a homer or stolen base in 20 days. Those days cover 17 playing games and three games where he was benched. His stats were better when benched. Those are the only two categories he was drafted for. His drafters figure that when he gets those homers and sb's, that rbi and runs will follow.
Wrong.
At this point, Justin Upton has 13 homers. That figure almost equals BJ's runs AND rbi. BJ Upton has nine runs and six rbi.
BJ Upton has one rbi during those last 17 games.
The saying, 'speed never slumps' did not have BJ Upton or fellows like Drew Stubbs in mind. Worse, if slumping at the plate, speed slumps on the bases. Upton hasn't had a stolen base since the first week of the season.
Three pitchers have stolen a base during that time.
BJ Upton drafters aren't talking about him. Neither are the talking heads.
They'd rather focus on Hank, rather than Tommie.
Adam Dunn is hitting .156
BJ Upton is hitting .145
Dee Gordon is hitting .220
We all know what we're getting into when we draft these guys.
And yet, we cannot resist the power. Or speed. Or the combination of both. All the while, knowing that our batting average will never recover. We'd need to draft 13 Joe Mauer's.
Looking over the Overall top 50 in the Main Event. Not one of them owns BJ Upton. A few owned Geeihurto Stanton which may tell us that owning an injured under performer is better than a week to week under performer. At the least, we can bench Stanton without fearing consequences.
The consequences of playing Upton are worse. And yet, he is still played.
And his owners know how Rome felt while Nero was playing.

On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
