The Attraction is in the Failure

I don't get excited about hitting streaks. I remember somebody having a 12 game hitting streak last year. During this streak, he was hitting .255.
Is that a streak?
A streak is elementary.
Every fan knows how to follow a streak. Almost every baseball fan even knows the record for a streak.
The simplicity is built in.
Michael Cuddyer had the longest hitting streak in baseball this year. It reached 27 games.
That seems like a long streak. But of course, pales in not getting even half way to Joe DiMaggio's streak of 56.

So, what am I getting at?
Well, these players are all paid a lot of money to get hits. And when they do, we celebrate them for doing so in such an easy way to keep track.
Still, it is their goal to get hits.
I'd like to celebrate and marvel at another player.
He doesn't have a hit streak.
If anything, I guess it can be called a hitless streak.
Chris Davis has struck out 22 games in a row.
It's easy to get paid to get hits, then go out and do it.
Chris Davis has a streak of doing what he is NOT supposed to do.
Try smoking at your job 22 days in a row.
Pee in the corner of your bosses office 22 days in a row.
Wear a shirt that says, I'M ONLY HERE BECAUSE THEY PAY ME! to work 22 days in a row.

Chris Davis has set himself apart from Michael Cuddyer or even Joe DiMaggio.
Baseball players are supposed to hit the ball.
27?
56?
Big deal!
Let's see them keep their jobs after striking out 22 games in a row.
Since the All Star break, Davis has struck out 20 times in 10 games.
If he'd of done that at the beginning of the season, a genius would have exclaimed that he'd be on pace to strike out 324 times.

These strike outs will be used against Davis during the off season.
He'll never repeat his average, blah, blah, blah.
Tell me Chris Davis owners, raise your hand if you thought Davis would give a great average.
Nobody? Yeah, me neither.

For now, I'm just going to enjoy the hitless streak. I don't know who has the current record.
I don't care.
One group thinks that the home run hitting contest has screwed Davis.
I don't care.
Another group says that the reality of Braun being suspended has hit Davis hard.
I don't care..
I don't care WHY....

We follow hit streaks because they amuse us. This one amuses me far more than even Joe DiMaggio's streak.
THIS IS:
A streak with no headlines.
A streak a player does not want continued.
A streak of failure.
Call me a little perverse for admiring the streak.
But, let's face it. This is like sending our ugly college roommate to hit on the prettiest girl in the room.
The attraction is in the failure.
