Nice Pick!!!

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Fri Nov 01, 2013 10:57 am

I went to my Grandson's middle school basketball game yesterday. We don't go watching these games to be enlightened or even entertained. It is mostly a show of support for a youngster in the family.
What I saw though, really pissed me off.
No longer do the best players play more. Nope, every child gets to play equal time. ARRRGGGGGHH!
I hate the wussification of America!
Something I saw made it worse than this 'every child gets a ribbon' attitude.
Sitting behind the bench, I witnessed a coach high fiving and saying "Great job, kids!".
These kids were whupped 16-0 while they were on the court!
Now, I realize these are Middle School kids and don't need Frank Kush to tell them to run in the desert for a bad performance, but crap, don't lie to the kids! At the least, remind them they have a lot of work to do if they want to get better.
If these kids were in the classroom and answered that Benjamin Franklin was our 16th President, I'll be damned if a teacher is going to high 5 him/her and say "Great Job!"
So why do they lie to them in athletic endeavors? It makes no sense.

It makes me feel better about being an adult. And a fantasy player.
If we take Jason Motte high in a draft and then get nudged by the player next to us that Motte is going to have Tommy John, I guarantee that not one adult at that table is going to lie to that drafter and say, "Nice pick!"....at least without sarcasm.
Instead, half will feel sorry for that drafter, while the other half laughs over his goof.

"Nice pick!" could mean so many things.
It could be sarcastic, as mentioned.
It could really mean, "Nice Pick!"
It could mean, "Nice Pick!....So glad he didn't take the guy I wanted....
It could mean, "Nice Pick!" said loudly, followed by a mumbled, "that's the third time that sombitch took MY player"

"Nice Pick!" is usually a well-intentioned two words. The other drafter may have seen something else in this player and has no idea how you want to build your team. Still, it makes the drafter feel good that somebody else appears to like his pick.
I've said "Nice Pick!"
I usually say it out of resignation.
Peeved that that player is now off the Board and that he was a consideration for my next pick. I never lie to a drafter and tell them "Nice Pick!", when I really thought the pick stunk.
If I did that, I may as well be coaching Middle School basketball.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

some owners could post "Nice pick!" to give the impression to EVERYONE reading the post, that they really wanted the player and they should move them up their rankings a bit...

"Nice Pick" for/from me means that I overlooked someone for some reason and would have otherwise selected.
