This is probably going to be a weak post. Posts are usually weak when the poster is talking out his ass. That's an expression used locally for somebody that knows little of which he speaks. I play little fantasy football and I don't play any daily baseball at all. My friends say I'd love daily baseball. Especially with my affinity for split stats.
And that's what I'm afraid of, I have highly addictive traits, especially anything involving baseball, and I'm afraid if starting daily baseball, I wouldn't want to stop.
But enough of that, let's get to the meat...
I only dabble in fantasy football. To me, luck has overtaken skill in the game. I know lots of others will disagree with that statement. They put a lot of work into their teams. I used to do the same. Fantasy football was huge for me. As the game changed into more specialized players, the degree of skill, in my mind, was overtaken by the chance of who would get the ball, not HOW MUCH they would get the ball.
Added to that luck is head to head play. I know that head to head play exists in baseball as well. I don't know why, but I do. Well, I guess I do know why. Players of head to head want to feel the juice of beating a team or the thought that they may be beaten.
Still, fantasy baseball is miles ahead of football in that the roto system is a fairer measurement of a team than head to head.
Invariably in fantasy football, a team will complain that although they have far more points than another team, or maybe ANY team, they're losing because of a poor win/loss record.
Is the juice of playing another team worth the integrity of a true winner?
Playing poker with wild cards adds juice to the game. It does not make it a better game. It only adds juice.
That is head to head fantasy. A game with wild cards.
When daily games sprang up, they were not head to head. They have a built-in juice. The juice of 'today is the day'.
Head to head is not needed.
In truth, head to head is not needed at all.
Some leagues have 'All play' or something like that where the top seven get a Win every week, the bottom seven, a loss.
This is ok. But still, a win/loss record reigns supreme.
If needing weekly juice, why can't these teams be ranked each week from the amount of points received?
In a ten team league, if scoring the most points, your team would get a 10, second most, nine, etc.
Weekly Standings would still be there and most points accumulated would be the winner.
Not as good as total points, but a better measure than a head to head league.
This would still have a weekly juice in rooting against other teams and would probably have a greater chance of keeping the integrity of the best team winning since it is a points based concept.
Like said, I may be talking out my ass, I don't know. But with the luck of fantasy football already teetering between 50/50 within the game itself, it boggles my mind that the luck is furthered by pitting random teams against each other every week.
The NFBC will never have head to head games. It's a good decision. There is enough luck in our game.
In my mind, the luck in fantasy baseball is 80/20. It's a good ratio. Luck is needed in any game. Even in a high fallutin' game such as Chess. NFBC Fantasy baseball is closer to Poker.......without the wild cards.

Dan,
You picked the wrong weekend to visit Las Vegas next year. I was hoping to see you there.

I'd like to see you too, John. It's my wife's turn to pick this year (long story).Walla Walla wrote:Dan,

It's not set in stone yet, so there is still hope we could see each other.
