Perspective

Perspective is such a weird thing. My grandson asked me, who is the best player in baseball?
I responded, 'You tell me'.
His thought was that Miguel Cabrera was the best player in baseball because he won the Triple Crown.
To him, the Triple Crown is a big thing. And it is. But like any award or statistic, it only serves to offer up counterpoints.
Is Cabrera the best player in baseball?
I don't know....more on that later in the post...
In another thread, a reader liked Carlos Gomez in the third round and did not like Jay Bruce in the second. The first thing that I thought about was the reliability factor. Without looking, I think that Jay Bruce has never been dl'ed. Never played less than 150 games, unless it was a rookie year or something. I never think of Gomez as being reliable. I doubt that he's had many season of 150 games. And he only found power two years ago which smacks of PED's.
And after seeing him last year, it looks like he has roid rage....
But, my fantasy rule is that it's ok to take PED's, just don't get caught if you're on my team.
Still, the risk remains.
PLUS, and this is a big plus for me, I don't trust fast right handed hitters.
I have no stats to back it up, but it seems right handed speedsters get hurt more than lefties. And I say that knowing that Ricky Henderson was right handed and didn't get hurt all that much.
But I also think about Pierre, Ichiro, and even Ty Cobb. But that's not fair, as everybody knows, there was no use for a dl when Cobb played.
I told you perspective was a weird thing.
I wonder why a team would sign Kevin Youkilis....and you know a team will.
It's like signing a guy with polio. That team has to know how much they're going to get out of Youkilis, but still, they sign him.
It's like asking the ice cream man for a bowl of soup. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
The Rockies sign guys like Cuddyer, and Morneau, and now they're after Michael Young. Why?
Because they're good clubhouse guys.
I guess that makes plane rides and team meetings more comfortable...BUT WHAT ABOUT WINNING???
Leo Durocher said nice guys finish last. If that's the truth, the Rockies will have the worst record in baseball next year.
I'm not sure whether it was Durocher who said it, or somebody else, but somebody said, 'I don't care if they're blue, green, came from Hell, or screwed my sister; If he can hit, he has a spot on my team!'
The Mets are trumpeting trading Murphy and Ike Davis. Does anything lessen the trade return for a player more than the opposing GM KNOWING the Mets are trying to trade these players.
The Mets are stupid. They believe that ANY headline is a good headline.
If they played poker, they'd swallow hard every time they had a good hand. Everybody at the table would know and fold.
Somebody told me I was anti-Mets.
I'm not.
I'm anti-stupid.
The Mets have a large park. Daniel Murphy was the perfect Met last year. He didn't try to hit homers. He started using street smarts (stealing bases) and for that, he's put on the trade block.
He was their best offensive player last year.
For that, he's on the trading block.
And now, reports are that Ruben Amaro wants to trade his best offensive player from last year.
Perspective is needed in both places....
Until then, the Braves and Nats will know it is a two-team race before it even starts....
I don't think there is a best player in baseball. At least at the moment.
Gun to my head, I'd take Mike Trout number one in a fantasy daft.
At the same time, gun to my head, I'd rather have Miggy up at the plate.
Right now, it is the difference between a Most Valuable Player award and a 'Player of the Year' award.
Miggy gets the MVP for keeping his team in contention and Trout gets the POY for carrying Pujols and Hamilton all year.
For fantasy purposes, I'd love to see Cabrera play in Texas, Trout in Boston.
Just to see the numbers......just from a fantasy perspective.
