The Straight Poop

I have never understood, fully, the phrase, 'Shit rolls downhill'.
Who shits at the top of a hill?
I figure that at sometime, a kid replaced the word 'lava' with shit. And it stuck.
The gist of the phrase is that something or somebody above us will make their problem, our problem.

In fantasy baseball, shit rolling downhill is more inadvertent.
The Phillies bullpen being porous, costs Cliff Lee Wins two years ago. Last year, it was Cole Hamels turn.
Carl Crawford looks like one of the best players in baseball in a Tampa uniform. With anybody else, he is over paid kryptonite.

Time, can be the shit rolling downhill.
Alex Rodriguez is more known for being a cheater than great hitter.
Ryan Braun is a liar first, hitter second.
Tony Siragusa was a football player. Now, his name is associated more with male leakage.
I don't know which is worse.

Shit rolling downhill was a thought to me yesterday.
I read about Jose Iglesias possibly missing the coming season. Iglesias is a light hitter. Even if getting a lot of hits, most would not likely effect roto numbers. Where the 'shit rolling downhill' comes into play is with his defense.
Maz Scherzer, Verlander, and Sanchez don't need Iglesias defense. They could put up numbers with a low-ranging shortstop like Jhonny Peralta.
Drew Smyly and Rick Porcello are a different matter. These guys needed Iglesias. Both like to throw ground balls.
Iglesias has a chance to be one of the best defensive shortstops to ever play shortstop. With Iglesias out for the year, it has my interest in Smyly and Porcello waning a bit.
In short, at the bottom of the hill, Smyly and Porcello haven't been covered by what's coming down the hill, but they have been spattered.
If one or both of them start out the year getting bombed, then, they will be covered.

And that is when the shit hits the fan.
I've never understood shit hits the fan.
Who shits on a fan?....
And worse, who then turns it on?
Shit hitting the fan is what happened to the Braves. In less than a day, they probably lost almost half their rotation to Tommy John.
Will the Braves be as good as once thought?
Probably not.
So, while the shit hit the fan for Medlen and Beachy, that same shit rolled downhill for Braves fans. It also rolled downhill for Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel is a favorite for those liking good peripherals from their Closer.
But, we chiefly draft Closers for Saves. It's safe to say that the loss of Medlen and Beachy took Saves away from Kimbrel.

As a fantasy player, I've resolved that the best thing to do is simple.
I'm staying away from the bottom of hills and I'm staying away from fans.
No good comes to us when being near either of them.
Still, there is no real safe place.
Sometimes, when thinking we are in that safe place, when thinking we are safely out of harms way, we aren't.
Shit happens.

Edited for stupid grammar...

LOL Dan, I'm guessing the genesis of this phrase probably has to do with the same concept used for sanitary lines. As long as you have a pitch that goes from a higher elevation to a lower one, you're good. (That is unless you want to invest in a sewage pump).

Nonetheless, a great read as always.
