Do you like Prince Fielder this year?
Jason Kipnis?
Tulo?
Pedro Alvarez?
We all think of players differently. One thing we do though, almost as a whole, is penalize players for not performing as they have in previous years. Prince Fielder is the same Prince Fielder who was taken at the end of the first round and second rounds just last year. What has changed is that Fielder screwed his owners by getting hurt. And even though he played bunches of consecutive games before his boo-boo, he is being punished.
A two round penalty for Fielder. Because now, we have to think about him in another way. And we don't like thinking that way.
Same for Jason Kipnis. He was taken in the second or third rounds last year. He too, has dropped at least two rounds.
Fielder and Kipnis pulled a double whammy. Not only were they hurt, but when playing, they looked more like nose picks instead of top picks.
It was a small window of under performance so for that, they are given some rope by drafters and are not penalized much further.
Pure under performance was what we got from Pedro Alvarez. He has dropped 10 rounds as a penalty for sucking all year, last year. There is a way to under perform and not drop like a lead balloon as Alvarz has.
Be young.
Gregory Polanco did not play up to anybody's standards last year. His age gives him a mullgan.
Drafters may think that he'll 'get used' to Major League pitching this year. If he performs the same as last year though, he will drop.
Afterall, his name is not Bryce Harper.
Then, there is Tulo. Tulo is unlike any other player in baseball.
He is the best player at his position. Almost anybody in baseball will agree with that statement.
Everybody also knows his injury history.
A drafter knows that Tulo is going to get hurt. His bet is no longer if Tulo will get hurt. Nope. It is what time of year will Tulo get hurt.
If getting three months from Tulo, his drafters are getting Starlin Castro numbers. If getting four months, his drafters are getting their money back from the pick. Anything more than four months is gravy.
Problem being that Tulo has averaged playing less than 90 games the past three years. Meaning his under/over for playing games would be close to 81 or a half season.
At first round prices, he is both intriguing and a sense of deja vu for past drafters.
The talent is as unquestionable as his brittle hips.
Taking Tulo is a little like an experience like a friend of mine had in College.
(Alert- Do not let your kids read this)
A friend of mine met a beautiful girl. This girl has long blond hair, slender legs, a tooth smile that could make you wilt, and a well-endowed bosom.
We were, of course, jealous.
So, as guys without eye candy like her on our arms, we tried to live vicariously through him. We would constantly ask if the dating had led to sex.
He would answer no and we would accuse him of being coy or not being honest with us.
We found out a little later that he was being totally honest.
We walked into the locker room and asked him the same questions he had heard for weeks. Only this time, he did not answer.
There was a swell of exclamations. "BILLY GOT SOME!" " BILLY GOT LAID!" BILLY BROKE HER CHERRY!"
All that kind talk that kids do. But Billy was not smiling.
He explained that they did not have sex, but that she had given him oral sex.
So somebody asked why he looked so glum.
He pulled his jock down. His dick looked like it had been in a cat fight. And lost.
It looked like a tongue after a cherry Slurpee.
Fifty shades of red.
"Right from the get go, it was as if she couldn't get her teeth out of the way. The more she tried, the worse it got.
And while she was trying not to use her big teeth on me, I was gritting mine!!!"
"I never did consumate. I told her that I have a lot of problems going on. I didn't want to tell her she was killing me!"
He looked so forlorn.
In two weeks, they were no longer seeing each other.
And the fellas on the baseball team were in no hurry to give her a call. Beautiful as she was.
Tulo is a gifted player to draft.
But he may have teeth that can lead a drafter to feeling like Billy.
Tulo May Have Large Teeth
Tulo May Have Large Teeth
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
