Ramblings...

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Jul 22, 2015 10:12 am

I know a couple of fellas that have had Jose Peraza on their roster all year.
I could never do this with ANY minor leaguer.
A roster spot in the Main Event competition is gold.
We use it for injury.
We use it for matchups.
We use it to stream pitchers.
We use it for positional purposes.
We use it for enhancing a category.
Those seven spots are our wing man.

In a baseball world of young call-ups, Peraza has not heard the call. The Braves, most likely, will wait till September to call him up. They are a franchise who are looking at tomorrow, more than today. Peraza is part of their tomorrow.
Still, I have a little understanding in why he is held on by some. Many youngsters have been moved up to the Majors this year.
Peraza owners are now being stubborn in that they've waited this long. May as well wait till September.
It is not a big problem since most Peraza owners are out of contention for first place in most leagues.

You know what I want my starting pitchers to do every day?
Twirl.
That's right.
Twirl.
Since I was a kid, a pitcher never 'twirls' a bad game.
Never.
Nope. They always twirl a masterpiece. Or a one-hitter. Or a two-hitter. Or, a three-hitter.
When a pitcher twirls, he's killing it.
Nobody ever 'twirls' a 1ip, 8 er game.
Even today in RotoWorld blurbs, a pitcher twirls and it is never bad.
I think it falls under the 'lefties are crafty' rule in that lefties are the only ones that can be crafty.
And I always thought of Greg Maddox as being crafty, but the rule says I'm wrong.

Another good word for fantasy pitchers rhymes with twirl.
Hurl.
In real life, 'hurl' is something done post-drunken binge, but for fantasy folks, gold.
If a pitcher 'hurls' a game, it means he pitched a lot of innings and did a great job.
A pitcher can hurl a no-hitter, but for some reason a pitcher cannot twirl a no-hitter.
A pitcher can even hurl ten innings although that seldom happens any more.

So, in reading RotoWorld blurbs, if you read, 'insert your pitchers name here 'twirled or hurled' ,keep reading.
In reading your pitcher was 'hammered' or' bombed', move on.

I tell this story not to be mean. Or racist. Or any of the other babble that others like to put on other folks. I tell the story because it is part of those times.
After Jackie Robinson, baseball changed. And no, it just wasn't the fact that a black player was on the field.
Some teams went on signing binges in raiding black leagues of players and former players. Hank Aron, Willie Mays, Roy Campanella, Larry Doby, Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson, Don Newcombe all changed the complexion of their teams.
The American League except for the Cleveland Indians, were slower to embrace black players.
A big reason why the All Star game went to the National League in the 50's and 60's.
One of the last teams to embrace a black player were the New York Yankees.
The Yankees were winning World Championships and felt no need to direct their attentions to playing black players.
Not to mention that one of their owners was overheard to say that no N..... would ever wear a Yankee uniform.
The Yankees finally relented though.
They signed Vic Power....and traded him.
Then signed Elston Howard and finally moved him up to a Spring training.
By this time, black players had a 'wow factor' for baseball fans. They stole more bases. They turned singles into doubles and doubles into triples. They charged balls in the outfield and threw on the run.
Things that white players did not do much during that era.
The speed of the game of baseball grew by leaps and bounds.
Elston Howard was a catcher. A catcher with a great arm and a good bat.
After seeing Elston Howard in Spring training for a couple of days, Casey Stengel had this remark for some reporters.
"We finally get a N....., and he can't run."

Sometimes I think baseball has changed too much. There is no doubt that it has become much more of an individual game, than team game. Free agency was the genesis for this transformation. The game has changed from nine players with one goal to nine players with their own goals. Winning, simply collateral damage of their own goals.
Managers do not rule dugouts as the past. Now, they are counselors who must have players get along with him and other players. Knowing that Managers are fired, not players.

The other night the Rangers visited the Rockies in a game that only friends, family, and fantasy cared about.
The score was 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Tulo led off with a basehit.
CarGo is up.
For you folks who don't live in Colorado, a little insight....
The Rockies franchise has revolved around Tulo and CarGo since both signed long term contracts.
Ownership has perpetuated this thinking to themselves and fans. It has tanked the Rockies for years, but ownership knows that these two players put fannies in the seats.
Case closed for them.

I thought about all this as CarGo took his stance in the batters box. The announcers pointing out that even though this was a bunt situation to get the winning run to second base, incredulous that the Rangers were still shifting for CarGo.
The Rangers know the Rockies M.O.
They know that CarGo is bigger than Walt Weiss.
They know the ego in having a chance for a walkoff.
A bunt?
That's for lesser players.

CarGo ended up looping a single. It was then, with the danger of a double play ball eliminated that Weiss sent a pinch runner for Tulo at second base. I have to give Weiss credit. He didn't have the balls to flash CarGo the bunt sign, but he did have the smarts to keep Tulo in the game should the worst happen during CarGo's at bat.
Two batters later, Rockies fans went home happy after another basehit two batters later.
Happy that the Rockies had won a game. Oblivious to why it doesn't happen more.

CYCLE!!!! don't usually use caps- but I knew you would be thrilled to know choo hit for the cycle last night- you must have missed it. also- the great mark buerle just went 9 games in a row allowing 2 runs or less- a blue jays record. roy halladay and a few other great pitchers pitched for the blue jays- but mark has the record. a guy on these boards is constantly moaning about wins and he will- until he quits drafting guys on teams that blow- or he could just draft buerle and never have to moan about wins- or his pitcher getting hurt. mark buerle who has a no hitter a perfect game and got both a win and a save in the world series. the save coming after he had a few beers. congrats mark.

Hard to believe it's been only 50 years since we went from completely accepting public intolerance of people who have a different color skin (which can't be changed), to now being so sensitive of intolerance that you're derided for not falling all over yourself to applaud anything different even when that different is by choice ... including narcissistic-media whore-vehicular murdering gender-swapping idiots. Just give a good speech about protecting some victim group and you are in with the media, no matter how miserable a human you are. Pendulum too far, at least publicly, even as we know the same old color-racism still lies just beneath the surface for a large part of the population.

A politician was giving a speech the other day. Somebody yelled out, "Black Lives Matter!".
The politician responded, "All Lives Matter!"
Some group felt slighted that he would group black people with all people instead of signalling out that black lives matter.
He issued an apology the next day.
WUSSIFICATION!
Today's politician apologizes fearing he won't receive votes from one group or another.
There was a time (really youngsters, there was) when some politicians had balls and would stand by what was said.

I love Buehrle. Underrated doesen't begin to describe him. In today's sabr world, it seems if a pitcher doesn't miss bats, he is regarded lightly. Buehrle is said to pitch to contact. That is so wrong. He pitches to small contact. Weak flies. Weak grounders.
Power pitchers get all the pub and cred. Truly, I would rather see a Buehrle game over a Strasburg game any day of the year.
Oh I forgot, Buehrle pitches every fifth day, Strasburg, every fifth week.

As for cycles, I plain and simply don't give much of a rats ass about them. Baseball media darlings.
Today, I was told by an MLB guy that Teheran had a GREAT outing. Struck out 11.
Oh yeah, sure, he lost the game by giving up six hits, three walks, and three earned runs, but hey, GREAT game.
Just how low is the floor for GREAT games?

What three things do Jed Clampett and Jedd Gyorko NOT have in common?

1) People only love Jed Clampett.

2) Jed Clampett's is the only one who found Dorito dust strategically located on his daughter's rear end.

3) If Jed Clampett aims at something, he hits it.

Y'know, folks from the 60's always liked to compare Mary Ann and Ginger.
It was NO contest. Mary Ann every time.
The true question should have been the girls with the two names...

Mary Ann or Elly Mae?

Mary Ann, but mainly by default. For Elly Mae you had certain things to deal with:

1) Sleeps with "critters". So have I in the past and some of them even bit me (which I enjoyed) but after a while I would have to retaliate and Elly Mae would kick my ass if I bit back.
2) Have to hang around with Jethro. Too stupid for words. If I want to hang around stupid, I would go to my own family reunions.
3) Everyone in the house proficient in firearms (or slingshots). I am hard to live with and don't run nearly fast enough.
4) Grits are good, but I ain't eatin' possum for nobody.
5) Granny kind of stingy with the jug.
6) Risk of getting caught swimming in the water tank with cousins Bobbie Jo, Billie Jo and Bettie Jo while visiting the Shady Rest too great (see #3 above).
7) Occasionally seeing Miss Jane sunbathing by the cement pond enough to shrivel the hooties permanently.

In regards to Peraza, I hold the magic touch.

I disagree totally that he is coming up in September. He isn't coming up at all, and I implied this with a much earlier response to something you posted I believe back in April.

Every year, there are 1 or 2 rookies I draft, and they are drafted on every single team, and every year, they ride my pine the entire season as they are the only 1 or 2 rookies to never get called up. I suspect Peraza will be that guy this season, and I'm sure it has a lot to do with my lack of success, but I don't believe there is another NFBC owner more snakebit than I when it comes to rookies. This is at least 6 years running for me, and I don't think any drafted rookie for me has played a single game in the majors, the year I drafted him.

Next year, all owners should look at my rosters on draft day or within the days following the draft. If I drafted a rookie, and you have that same rookie on your roster, cut him. We wont play in the majors in 2016. It's a guarantee. I won't be smart enough to cut him, but he most certainly wont be up.

That being said, back to the magic touch.

If I waive him Sunday during FAAB, the Braves will recall him on Monday. That is yet another sure thing. Hence the reason he sits on my bench.

I have the same thoughts when choosing lineups. I know that my bench sitters are going to go off and frustrate me to no end.
Gregg, if I were you, I simply would not draft rookies.
There are parts of this game that still kick my ass. I put up the white flag, knowing those facets of the game, will indeed, kick my ass.

I might be Chicken Little in this comment, but I don't want the NFBC to lose guys like you to the daily game. I know that you and several others are finding the daily game intriguing. At least four NFBC players I've talked to, are going to put less money towards the NFBC game and more into the daily game this coming year.
Greg does not see the daily game as a threat.
I believe he should.

Just adding to my last point...

The daily game of fantasy sports has folks talking about fantasy as they did of the poker boom a few years ago.
And it is very similar.
We are now riddled with commercials in how folks can make millions through the daily games.
Greg thinks that this is just great for the NFBC and the fantasy business.
I disagree. I do not think it will be good for the NFBC.
Although many more players are being introduced to our industry, it is the daily game they crave.

Poker has many games.
But after that craze, Texas Hold 'Em is the one game being played my most kids.
Heck, I was teachimg my grandson how to play some other forms of poker, he was astounded that there were games other than Texas Hold 'Em.
My point is that the daily games are the Texas Hold 'Em of fantasy and we are becoming those other games seldom seen.

Agree 100% on the last post Dan ... the true diehard fantasy baseball players will continue to play (unless they lose too much on DFS) but drawing new/young players will be harder to do......

My home baseball league which I have been in for 10 years is disbanding next year because all the younger guys are leaving for daily. I won't be playing any season long football this year and will only be doing the daily games. I'm certainly not young.

I certainly get that.

It's just tough to justify losing year after year in annual, and only at this level I might add, and yet consistently winning year after year in daily.

I'm able to pay for NFBC because of daily results.

It's also frustrating when you lose year after year for the very same reasons, which are poor luck in selecting rookies and ridiculous luck when it comes to injuries.

Different strokes...

The daily games are to me a Snickers bar from the vending machine.

The NFBC is a souffle from La Cuisine de Philippe in Paris.
