Allow me a lot of latitude with this post. I am trying to read between the lines. And when trying to read between the lines, sometimes, it leaves us with egg on our face (where in the Hell did that phrase come from?).
Anyway, I've been reading about the exploits of Yoenis Cespedes. I am sure that when the off season began that Cespedes and his agent thought that teams would throw money at them, hoping to lure Cespedes to their team.
It didn't happen.
Teams went after every other possible offensive difference maker first.
Cespedes has worn out short welcome's wherever he has gone. Except for with the Mets, where he didn't really have time to be, well, Yoenis Cespedes.
So now, with all the difference makers signed, Cespedes, according to writers, is choosing between a long contract with the Nats or a short contract with the Mets.
Cespedes is a sweet swinging pain in the ass.
He is the knock-out blond with a great body that made us cringe when she talked. We can only overlook it for so long till we can't stand it any more.
If the Nats sign Cespedes long term, Jonathon Papelbon will become an afterthought of a problem.
Cespedes playing second fiddle to Bryce Harper?
Yeah, right.
The Nats will have sold their souls.
And the devil will be in Cespedes being in their clubhouse.
The team becoming a Ces pool.
If signing with the Mets, Cespedes is the unquestioned best hitter on his team.
That's the way he wants it.
And, the largest City to watch him.
That's also the way he wants it.
It worked so well, that the Mets rode it all the way to the World Series last year.
The Mets have a leader in David Wright, who knows what is best for his team.
He wants to win and knows that if Cespedes is in their clubhouse, they have a better chance.
If these are the only two teams that Cespedes is really deciding between, a winner can already be declared.
If signing with the Nats. Mets Win.
If signing with the Mets. Mets Win.

Re: The Nats, The Mets And Yoenis Cespedes
recent word is that Mets working on a deal that would give Cespedes an opt out after first year so it makes a shorter deal more appealing for him - Love to see him back in Citi Field as you suggest.
Let Terry Collins figure out who will play where
Funny that both the teams "trying" to get Cespedes now both would have huge roster/lineup problems IF they sign him

Well Dan, if Cespedes proved anything, he is extremely confident in his own abilities. Throughout the offseason, many players took long-term security over the qualifying offer. Although Cespedes is getting a lot more than a qualifying offer, he gambled on himself and passed up on more overall money for the chance to break the bank next offseason. Here's hoping as a Mets fan that he does become a free agent at the end of the season, because that will have a lot better chance of bringing the World Series ring to Flushing then if he doesn't opt out.

Here is the ironic thing about this....mbendar16 wrote:Well Dan, if Cespedes proved anything, he is extremely confident in his own abilities. End of the season - Chances of signing Cespedes - maybe 10% - And hardly any Mets fans wanted him back. He did nothing to speak of in the World Series and Mets fans were not happy about it. As time went by, and free agents signed elsewhere, including Daniel Murphy, with the Nats.... Mets fans realized, maybe we should sign him. Then, the Nats got involved, and boom, Mets fans wanted him back and started killing ownership. We are sometimes an embarrassing group of fans, us Mets maniacs. We love Wright, but hate him. We love Harvey, but hate him. Everyone loves Granderson, so he is the exception. We just want to win a world series. Its been 30 years. We have 4 stud pitchers and this is our chance. The last thing we want is the Nats to get our guy, because our guys always play well when they leave (see Nolan Ryan).
I think the opt out is good for both parties. He plays well and we get back to a world series... then he gets a bigger contract with us or elsewhere... who cares.. we get our world series. Otherwise, we are not bound by a 5 or 6 year contract.
