What's in a name?
If asking me, a lot.
I don't know why, but most guys named Larry in my town are not liked very well.
In other towns, I'll bet Larry is a hit.
There's a town for everybody.
I've written about Johnny Dickshot before. He was so ugly, he called himself the 'Ugliest Man in Baseball'.
Seriously.
Of course ladies, you know what they say about ugly men.
Well, I don't know either.
We had Minnie Minoso and we have Max Scherzer.
Coco Crisp is not funny because we're used to the name.
20 Years from now, Coco Crisp again, becomes funny.
Just once, I wanna hear Elmer Fudd do some schtick about Yasiel Puig.
We have Wright and
Wong and
White and
Kong
We had Babe Ruth...so close to Baby Ruth bars.
We had Yogi Berra...so close to a cartoon character.
We had Mike Piazza...so close...never mind, I just like pizza.
We have a player named Adonis and Socrates in our drafts.
Those guys better be good!
Then, there is Asdrubal and Pujols.
No or low expectations....
Then, there was Wonderful Terrific Monds.
In the Braves minor league system during the 70's.
Guess he wasn't wonderful or terrific enough to make the Majors.
But, somewhere along the line, he had to have met Wayne Edwards....
There was a pitcher named Dick Pole.
Dick's are just too easy.
Dick Trickle, the best
Dick Groat, the worst.
If not liking Dick, just Dickie Thon or RA Dickey.
There was Dizzy Dean and
Daffy Dean and
Dazzy Vance and
Dean Chance and
Vance Law
We have Baa Baa Black Sheep and
Bebe Neuwirth and
Bobo Newsome and
Boog Powell and
Boof Bonser
Ed Head and
Barry Foote and
Bill Hands and
Rollie Fingers

1) I never got to see him play (he only had one season near me in Greenville SC).
2) He was actually "Wonderful Terrific Monds III", so at least three people had to live with constantly repeating their names when introduced.
"Hi, I am Wonderful Monds."
"Excuse me? I did not quite catch that."
But I did see Larvell "Sugarbear" Blanks play when he was the Braves starting shortstop in 1975. Does that count?
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
