Fun With Numbers

So far in drafts the same eight players have occupied the top 11 of EVERY draft.

Mike Trout
Mookie Betts
Jose Altuve
Kris Bryant
Nolan Arenado
Paul Goldschmidt
Clayton Kershaw
Manny Machado

There is far less deviation in the first round than any other. We feel 'comfortable' that these players will continue producing as they have in the past. There are also a lot of 'in the box' drafters who follow the credo of, "A draft can't be won in the first round, but it can be lost."
So generally, the first round is conservative.
Yes, there'll be the occasional drafter who will take Clayton Kershaw or even Trea Turner with the first pick.
Unnecessary, if kds'ing properly, but those drafters made their splash.

There is a drafter in every draft who believes that Bryce Harper is a first round pick too. Harper's lowest draw has been with the 14th pick. Apparently, drafters think of last year as a hiccup.
This year, Trea Turner has replaced Carlos Correa as the Golden Boy.
21 players have been taken no later than the second round. 11 of those 21 have a first name starting 'M' or 'C'.

Remember last year when the trio of shortstops going in the fifth round had some drafters appalled?
They felt there was no way that those three should be going that high.
Now, Corey Seager, Francisco Lindor, and Xander Bogaerts are being taken in the second round this year.
Oops!
Do we select Buster Posey out of habit?
It seems like Posey has lived the same area of drafts for as long as Aroldis Chapman has been going in the same area of drafts. How many drafts are actually won with these two players?
Somebody help me out there.

If we can be guaranteed 155 games for two players, they too, would be taken in the first round of some drafts.
Giancarlo Stanton and AJ Pollock.
They break hearts as easily as bones.

Of the first 59 offensive players selected, seven are from the same team.
Or, put another way, 12% of the first 59 players selected are from the same team.
It's not an American League team.
It's the Colorado Rockies.
Their lineup should look like this to start the year

Blackmon (13)
LeMahieu (58)
Arenado (5)
CarGo (45)
Desmond (40)
Dahl (59)
Story (23)

A damned fine lineup.
The Rockies first pitcher taken for the umpteenth year is their 'Closer'. Closer in quotations since he may not be their Closer.
Coincidentally, Adam Ottovino is the first Rockies pitcher and 59th pitcher selected overall.
Still, amazing that the Rockies have seven hitters in the top 59.
The Phillies FIRST offensive player (O Herrera) is drafted 77th.

Only five pitchers have been drafted in the first two rounds of every draft

Clayton Kershaw
Max Scherzer
Madison Bumgarner
Chris Sale
Noah Syndergaard

All but Bumgarner has(d) some kind of a problem.
Kershaw, back issues
Scherzer, knuckles
Sale, uni's
Syndergaard, elbow

Except Kershaw, all of these pitchers finished in the top 10 in strike outs.

Just a few numbers for fun.....

Kyle Hendricks allowed 45 earned runs last year.
James Shields allowed 40 home runs last year

Noah Syndergaard allowed 48 stolen bases last year.
His team, the Mets, stole 42 bases all last year
Use that one in a bar bet!

30 players in baseball had at least 19 stolen bases last year....so did the Baltimore Orioles team

And finally, if you want to look at a stat that gives you hitters NOT to take highly in drafts...
Look at strike outs.
Don't listen to Sabr's.
Here is a list of the qualified players who struck out the LEAST last year

1 Joe Panik
2 Jose Iglesias
3 Daniel Murphy
Jose Ramirez
5 Yadier Molina
Alexei Ramirez
7 Adrian Beltre
Angel Pagan
9 Yunel Escobar
10 Brandon Phillips
Buster Posey
Ender Inciarte

Murphy, Beltre, and Posey being the only top five rounders on the list.
As Babe Ruth said, "Never fear the strike out".

welcome back! 4 posts and no JOEY VOTTO mention. just thought i would correct that. the colorado lineup will hurt someone a little bit. i know i did not draft story to bat 7th- but that is where he sits. desmond should bat 7th- but they spent all that $ on him - so he won't. dj could get hurt as well if he bats 7th.

Mike, I'm going to post a 'Fantasy Camp' here in a little while.
It does mention Joey Votto a couple of times.
If you guys like the episode, I'll put it with the other 'Fantasy Camps'.

Thanks for the welcome!
