This Year's Main Event Team

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Mar 15, 2018 10:45 am

Some NFBC friends are asking me if I'll start the Main Event Draft as I did last year.
If not remembering, I started my Main with...

1. Bumgarner
2. Sale
3. Sanchez
4. KHendricks
5. Contreras

Probably the only time where only pitchers and catchers were taken with the first five picks.
It wasn't a 'strategy' going into the draft. I decided that I was going to take the highest players on my own personal lists, no matter the position.
It made me feel 'icky' going into the sixth round, but it turned out pretty well.

If anything, this draft illustrated that we can do several things wrong during a draft and season and still win an NFBC Main Event League.
Bumgarner was of little use during the season.
Hendricks was not the pitcher that I thought he would be.
I drafted Cody Bellinger...then dropped him the week before he was called up.
I FAAB'ed Tommy Pham and dropped him soon after when thinking STL would send him back down.

Of course, there were things that went right.
My catchers justified their high picks, as did Chris Sale.
I drafted an injured JD Martinez in the 12th round and also made up for the power loss at the front of my draft by picking Khris Davis, Hosmer, Seager, etc
And I would FAAB Marwin Gonzalez and Rhys Hoskins.
In the end, I believe that I did as much right as I did wrong and it was just enough to win my league by a mere half point.

So, the question is, would I start a draft in that manner again.
Yes, but again, it won't be a strategy.
Again, I am going to take the highest players off my list for the first five rounds without regard to position.
If that is three pitchers and two catchers again, so be it.
Spoiler alert though, I don't see two catchers happening unless 50 other things happen.
One catcher, yes, two, probably not.
The problem being that I can't see Wilson Contreras being drafted by me unless slipping far.
Last year, I felt I was 'ahead' of other drafters in grading Contreras. This year, other drafters expect a lot more of Contreras and have put him as a bottom of the third round or top of the fourth round pick.
He may have a hard time bringing back those type of numbers for drafters.

I'll probably have a more mainstream beginning to my draft this year.
But, it's no guarantee.
I started one DC by taking pitchers with four of my first five picks.
I also started a DC with no pitchers till the sixth round.
But, and it's a big BUT, DC's are nothing like Main Events.
We use DC's as toys or experimental drills before the Main Event.
For the Main Event, we bring our A Game.
It is why I take the top players off my list.
And it is why my lists are ever-changing leading up to the Main Event.
Anyways, I can't wait to see who will be drafted myself.
As always, I'll let you know the who and why when finished.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
