If Believing In Sanity, We Wouldn't Play This Game

Sometimes drafting is taxing. Players aside, it messes with our heads.
Let's say you are in the fifth round of a draft, you have an OF, SS, SP, 1B.
You think to yourself, I can draft ANY position.
"At least I am not a slave to a position, I can draft ANYBODY!"
You start thinking about your next move....
You are only one pick away.
"Hmmm, I would really like Carpenter, or Cain, or Greinke here..."
You think to yourself that sometimes NOT putting yourself in a box is not is freeing as thought.
You literally have your choice of any player on the board. Zero position restrictions.
But now that that is done, it is harder to narrow down our choice.

The next pick comes in.
Mallex Smith.
The first thought is "Oh good, I didn't want him anyway."
Then you cuss the drafter a little for not taking one of your three choices because that would have made for an easier selection.
Then, "What does Mallex Smith have that my choices don't have?"
You laugh it off as somebody wanting to over draft speed.
Oh wait, "How am I doing on speed?"
Self-assuring yourself that you're ok, you start making your choice between the three candidates.
You make up your mind that Cain is the choice.
Pushing the 'Draft' button, you wonder if the Mallex Smith selection before you prompted you to take the speed guy.
The next drafter selects Matt Carpenter.
The next, Greinke.
"Maybe I should have taken one of them!"
It only took those drafters seconds to draft them!
On the other hand, you are on the right track!
Others wanted the same players you just decided upon!

What messes with your head the most is 'fading' a player.
This is when we decide NOT to draft a player one round, thinking he has a chance to come back to you in the next round.
This is especially popular for players who've received pessimistic news.
It is the 22nd round, you're needing a C and you like Jorge Alfaro.
You know that he has been traded to Purgatory.
BUT, you still like Alfaro as a hitter and you don't believe that the Marlins will effect his numbers THAT much.
So, you fade him.
You draft another player in hopes that you can put off the catching position one more round.
He gets taken.
The knee jerk reaction is to flip the middle finger at your screen. And you do it.
Then, start cursing yourself because now you're left with C that don't kinda suck like Alfaro will in Miami, but catchers that have learned to suck EVERYWHERE.

A larger fade is being near the corner in the first round.
You are not only selecting between two players, but also which player is more likely to be there one or two picks later.
It's the first round. THIS IS IMPORTANT! You have to get this right.
At 14, if wanting a Machado/Altuve start, you look at ADP, you look at who is likely to be drafted by team 15. You may even talk yourself into saying that team 15 is going pitcher/pitcher so it all won't matter.
But, it matters.
It matters a lot.
You want both. Damn greed.
There is no mulligan in drafting.
Once the decision has been made, it is the fantasy Gods in control.
It seems as if they are always against us.
Just read the MB's about the randomizer.
We all think, in a small way, that no matter what we do, we're screwed.
We don't know it, we just think it.
Fantasy baseball messes with your head.
If believing in sanity, we wouldn't be playing this game.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

smith in the 5th?? let's see, the guy has a ceiling of 5HR and 40 RBI. he carries the risk of batting 9th in the lineup and even being platooned. wish i could get in these types of leagues with DONKEY owners
