Joey Votto- The Truth

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sat Mar 16, 2019 8:53 am

I received several comments about a recent post of Joey Votto.
Guys, Votto is a wonderful baseball player.
For 'regular' baseball, Votto is the kind of hitter, every team would want.
It is true that he has been miscasted in the batting order.
Votto had a great year as long time ago (2010). Since then, his Managers have thought of him as an RBI guy.
He's not.
What Votto really is, is the perfect leadoff hitter.
And to this day, no Cincy Manager leads him off.
Votto pisses starting pitchers off. He fouls away very good pitches. Sometimes, the pitchers BEST pitches.
He continually sees six, seven, or eight pitches in an at bat. THAT is what you want from a leadoff hitter.

Sabrs believe that on base is the key to baseball for a hitter.
If true, don't we want that hitter to be on first base with no outs?
Hitting second or third, Votto's skills are summarily wasted.
During the course of a game, when a right handed pitcher is throwing, Votto is stripped away of his Manager's reckoning of RBI by the pitcher throwing around him to face Suarez behind Votto. They place Votto in the RBI spot, but see few RBI. It makes no sense.

Last year, Votto was a one-category player for fantasy baseball. Batting average.
He was below average commensurate to his drafting spot in all other categories.
I've railed about Votto driving me crazy as a fantasy owner.
Now, accustomed to the fact that he will walk tons, he just becomes a lesser option on the whole.
In baseball, it is fine to have a player with Votto's on base skills.
For our game, not so much.
His swing is more of a contact swing. He has no speed.
Our game is dominated by players who hit with power and/or have great speed.
Votto displays neither.
And for real baseball, his Managers never seem to realize what Votto has become.
Eddie Yost was called 'The Walking Man' for the amount of walks taken.
Votto has outYosted Yost.
Yet, his Managers do not have the sense to use the skill to its best benefit.
Votto finished the year, fourth in taking a base on balls last year.
132nd in extra base hits.
Yet, his Managers don't lead him off.
It may seem like I dislike Votto from previous posts.
I really don't.
He is a hard piece for us.
And it seems, even a harder piece for his Managers.
Votto is great at what he does.
One of the greatest in the history of baseball.
Sabrs appreciate it.
Fantasy players listen to them too much.
Managers not enough.
It really isn't fair for Joey Votto.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Votto? VOTTO? Nope...never heard of him.....
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
