Stuff and Junk

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Apr 04, 2019 9:28 am

It's early. One week into the season.
Stats will change dramatically with a 4 fer 4 or eight shutout innings.
But, it is what it is and here is what it is....

Zack Greinke has more homers (2) than the Los Angeles Angels (1) and Minnesota Twins (1)

Cody Bellinger has more RBI (13) than the Indians (12), Tigers (11), and Reds (11)

Ohio has a 'O' at both ends. Cincinnati and Cleveland have 'O' Stolen Bases.

The Yankees had the easy opening schedule of Baltimore and Detroit....the Yankees are 2-4

The Cincinnati Reds have scored 11 Runs this season.
Their problem was how to get the quartet of Kemp, Puig, Winker, and Schebler enough at bats.
Those players are thoughtful enough to make it easy on their Manager.
Schebler is 0-17, Winker, 0-13, Puig is 3-16, Kemp 1-12 and none of them have scored a run.
A roto line of .083/0/0/3/0

The man who leads Cincy in RBI?....Benchwarmer, Derek Dietrich (4).

Connor Joe Panik are two 2B in one. He hasn't scored a run.

Analytics and sabrmetric guys love the walk.
Fans could care less.
Have you ever heard a fan say, "Wow! He walked three times last night!"
Good hitters, or those with reputations for being good hitters, will be walked more than other batters.
Pitchers would rather see that result for great hitters and face the next batter...
Simple as that.
The leaders in drawing base on balls are...
Christian Yelich (8) (hot)
Bryce Harper (7) (hot)
Yonder Alonso (7) (RHB rookie behind him)
Maikel Franco (7) pitcher behind him)
Travis Shaw (7) (RHB follows)
Giancarlo Stanton (7) (reputation)
Joey Gallo (7) (RHB follows)

These hitters should not be lauded for drawing walks. Rather they should be lauded for being the good hitters they are.
So good, that pitchers would rather face the next batter.
In Maikel Franco's case, he has been intentionally walked five times already! (If I'm the Phils MGR, I put Cesar Hernandez there for speed. Speed on 1B is more appealing than brawn)
In his heyday, Albert Pujols drew more than 100 walks. This year, one.
His approach has not changed. His talent level has.
Mark Canha, on the other hand can be lauded for drawing walks. He has drawn six base on balls.
Still, I bet there is not one Oakland fan saying, "Hey, did you see Canha take that walk last night?"
One more thing regarding walks....and this driving me crazy...
During an interview, the Braves GM lauded Josh Donaldson.
It hasn't shown up in the numbers, but he has had some great TAKE'S during the first week of the season.
REALLY?! Great 'TAKES'?
Are you serious?
HE IS GETTING PAID TO HIT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
Alexander Hamilton can take a pitch and he's been dead 250 years!
He's had some great takes, my ass.

Paul Goldschmidt has struck out in 10 of 24 at bats.
He has four home runs.
Nobody cares about the strike outs.

Willy Adames has struck out in 13 of 23 at bats.
Adames has just one hit.
Everybody cares about the strike outs.

The Red Sox got their Championship with Chris Sale.
With Sale losing juice, this may be the year that the Sox are turned inside out on the Sale-Moncada trade.
Moncada just may be this years Javy Baez.
So far, .450/9/2/6/0

Or how about a player barely drafted?
Kolten Wong- .476/7/3/6/2

You've seen a week of baseball. So have I.
Still, I could not answer this question correctly.
Can you?
What pair of hitters lead baseball in extra base hits?
Hint- One comes from the NL, the other from the AL
Answer at the bottom of the post....

Jason Heyward is hitting .286
That is the good news.
The bad news is worse.
Heyward has no extra base hits.
And here is the kicker, in five games, Heyward has grounded into five double plays.
Jason Heyward is a pitchers best friend.
By the way, pitchers want Heyward to hit. He has drawn zero walks.
In the four years Heyward has been with the Cubs, he has one more homer than Evan Gattis hit last year.
Gattis is now out of baseball.
Let's face it, if not for his contract, Wayward Heyward would be getting Derek Dietrich playing time...if that.

As good as Josh Hader is, Shane Greene has the same amount of Saves.
Gotta love fantasy baseball.

An incredible eight teams have a team ERA under 3.00
More incredible?
Seven of those eight teams are from the A.L.

To go along with that last thing....
Major league hitters, as a whole are batting just .232
Good hitting pitchers bat .232
Surprisingly, it breaks down this way....
National League- .245
American League- .220

The leaders in extra base hits?.....

David Peralta
Ryon Healy

Both have eight extra base hits.
Healy has nine hits in total.....

Camargo hits a three-run double to win a game and Josh Donaldson is counting his money and has four singles for the year.
He is a great, great, GREAT TAKER though.
What about results? GM's have become spin doctors. Analytics has helped them by making superfluous things important somehow.
Some things just want me to focus my passion elsewhere.
Great takes.
Ugh.

Two hot dog vendors in Atlanta.
The underpaid vendor sells 800 hot dogs a game. The overpaid vendor, 200.
When asked how the overpaid vendor is doing, his boss says, "He is doing great. He never slouches when carrying his hot dogs!
Josh Donaldson is an overpaid hot dog vendor.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
