Pisspoor Pivetta & Poopy Porcello

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Apr 17, 2019 10:05 am

I drafted Jesus Aguilar on almost all of my teams for this year.
I thought his price of the sixth round for a 35-100 1B was primo for fantasy dominance.
It didn't matter to me that he had only one full season under his belt.
It didn't matter to me that he had possible competition for his job at first base.
It didn't matter to me that, at worst, he could be on the bad side of a platoon.
What DID matter to me was that he was a 35-100 guy.

I don't regret drafting Aguilar liberally....at least, not yet.
The start of the season is the toughest time for fantasy owners.
It is tough to carry slumpers like Aguilar when guys like Clint Frazier already have four home runs.
It is tough to carry Nick Pivetta at all.
Same with Rick Porcello.

With a guy like Aguilar, I tell myself to be patient.
He'll come around.
And somehow, it is easier to say that with hitters.
Hitters are part of a 14 man pool in the NFBC.
One bad apple does not spoil the bunch.
A pitcher?
That is a different story.

What do Nick Pivetta owners do?
If having two injured players and Pivetta, it leaves them just four moves available for both offense and pitching.
Pivetta could come back or he could stay at AAA for a long time.
Pivetta has been one of the 'Cool kids' in NFBC drafts.
Somehow, called a 'sleeper', while being over drafted in the ninth round of Main Event drafts.
Folks, if a player is drafted in the ninth round of Main Event drafts, he is NOT a sleeper.
He is a player who has been so hyped by scribes, without tangible past performance, that most do believe that he is a sleeper.
At least Pivetta owners now have a choice. They can drop him or keep him.
Either, would be an acceptable choice on their part.
What about Porcello owners?

Porcello has looked rotten.
The trust has been lost.
Starting him makes us feel how Rodney Dangerfield looked on stage.
More nervous than a cat in room with 18 rocking chairs.
Unlike Pivetta, it doesn't seem right to drop Porcello.
He is not a 'sleeper'. He is a respected member of the baseball fraternity.
A pitcher on a top team with a Cy Young Award on his mantel. (Mickey Mantle had to have had a mantel)
Somehow, even though he has sucked the life out of his fantasy owners as much as Pivetta has, Porcello is a much tougher drop.

Just a month ago, the thought of trusting Porcello less than Mike Leake never entered our minds.
Now, if both were to pitch vs. a benign team like the Tigers, Leake would be making the start for most owners.
Oh, we know that Porcello is probably the better pitcher.
At least we think we do.
Porcello's past has been better and he plays on a much better team...or so we think.
Porcello has thrown 11 innings. He has a 3.00 WHIP. A 11.12 E.R.A.
Batters are hitting over .400 against him.
If Porcello's owners have thrown Porcello in his every game, they would need more than 30 scoreless innings pitched just to bring their ERA's down to the 3.00 area.
In the NFBC, one bad apple pitcher CAN spoil the whole bunch.

The Phillies made some owners decision of Pivetta a lot easier by sending him back to the minors.
Porcello owners have it tougher.
For now, he can ride the bench while they judge his appearances.
In doing so, they know they are using a valuable bench spot on a player they had no intention of seeing riding the bench.
Long range injuries are easy cuts.
Short term under performance is not.
Waiting on Jesus Aguilar?
That is easy.
Porcello?
Guys like him are what make our game so hard to play.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
