Third Round

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Fri Feb 21, 2020 7:52 am

Pete Alonso-

A Slug. Arguably the best Slug in baseball last year.
Scribes call him a three category player. Is he?
Is a player a three category player when a detriment in the other two?
He won't steal bases and he hit .240 over the last three months of the season last year.
I'm not going to go where experts go. They say 'regression' any time somebody has a great year.
BUT, unless you expect an even better year, why take him here?
I haven't drafted Alonso.

Gleyber Torres-

For everybody that is drafting Torres, yes, the Orioles are still in the division.
No player gets as much attention for beating up a team as Torres does with the Orioles.
And why shouldn't he?
He hit 38 homers last year. More than a third (13) came against the Orioles.
Here is the problem. Most of the Orioles pitchers have been moved to other teams or the minors.
He'll still kill them because they suck, but it can't be counted on.
And when playing the team game with Torres, all teams count.
He's had 99 at bats vs. Tampa....two homers and a .182 batting average.
I have drafted Torres.

Starling Marte-

Finally out of that fantasy hell hole in Pittsburgh. Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow got a reprieve.
Marte served too much time in Pittsburgh's prison system.
His former team, the Pirates have been ripping off baseball and their fans for years and I'm happy for any player that escapes.
Pittsburgh fired everybody from their President on down.
Not good enough.
It should have started with ownership.
Marte goes to a place that cares to win and score runs.
But, he may not be even the best 'Marte' on the team.
BUT, two Marte's are better than one and makes for a better Marte party.
A five category player whose only faulty skill is health.
With players around him now who can compete.
I have drafted Marte.

Aaron Judge-

This is short and sweet.
If you think Judge will be healthy, he'll be drafted in the second round.
If not. later.
I'm a later guy.
I believe I have drafted Judge once.

Austin Meadows-

As said earlier, Pittsburgh did Meadows a favor and traded him.
If still with Pittsburgh, he'd be in the minors or struggling for sure.
Do you believe he is THAT good?
To me, maintaining last years numbers may be a little tough.
He's had some health drawbacks in the past too.
But, he sure looks tasty.
I have drafted him.

Yordan Alvarez-

Freakin' Astros.
In our fantasy way of thinking, we don't know how this whole mess will screw with Astros players.
Alvarez is a great hitter. Wonderful.
But, the no positionality and Astros thing keeps me away.
I haven't drafted Alvarez this year.

Jose Altuve-

He certainly has a friend in Carlos Correa.
Altuve has changed as a fantasy player.
Get this....
In 2019, he had 31 homers and six stolen bases.
In 2014, he had seven homers and 56 stolen bases.
Who does that?
I can't remember a player in history who has transformed himself like Altuve.
Altuve plays old now.
Maybe it's the lack of stolen bases or the weight he carries with buzzergate, but is only 29!
He is a player that could fail or succeed and we wouldn't be surprised either way.
I have drafted him once.

Xander Bogaerts-

The shit hasn't hit the fan in Boston yet.
Who knows what the fallout will be.
Bogaerts had his best year last year.
That was with Mookie Betts in the lineup.
The Red Sox are down to just three wonderful offensive players. JD, Devers, and Bogaerts.
Overall, that will hurt Bogaerts this year.
I drafted Bogaerts once because of the bargain price.

Javier Baez-

They don't play or look anything alike, but fantasy-wise, Baez is similar to Bogaerts.
He is becoming the best hitter on his team while his teammates erode around him.
Baez will be followed in the Cubs lineup by Schwarber and Contreras, limiting Runs a bit.
From 2018 to 2019, Baez fell in all five roto categories.
It may happen again.
And like Bogaerts, I only drafted Baez once at a better price than usual.

Ketel Marte-

Experts are using the regression word liberally.
I believe he may have just taken longer to 'get it'.
If having to choose between Meadows and Marte for repeat numbers.
I'd go with Marte. I have drafted him.

Jonathon Villar-

It's a personal thing. We all have our players we feel this way about.
Whenever I think of Villar, I think 'DUDE AIN'T THAT GOOD!'
And when we draft these players, we beat ourselves up for the rest of the year, wondering why didn't I listen to myself?
But, here we are with Villar getting traded to another bad team and getting drafted in the third round.
If I'm in a draft with you, he is still yours.

Ozzie Albies

Geez! Six middle infielders in a row.
Albies may be the only full two-year player that we can call 'consistent'.
Look at this...

2018- .261/105/24/72/14
2019- .295/102/24/86/15

Gotta love that.
I've drafted Albies.

Patrick Corbin-

In almost every draft I have done, and I have done a lot, Corbin goes to a team who is drafting 10-15th in the draft.
If a drafter went hitter-hitter in the first two rounds and drafted 10th or later, Corbin has been their Man.
Corbin was very good last year.
Does he have a chance for first or second round numbers.
Doubtful.
Treading water.
I don't think I have drafted him, but may have earlier in the year. Too lazy to look.

Keston Hiura-

He showed signs of being a great hitter and a crappy fielder last year.
The Hit tool is there. I'm dubious about speed.
He will be taken out of a lot of games in the eighth inning for defense.
Most drafters I know either love him or hate him as a draftee.
I'm one of the few in the middle.
I've drafted Hiura.

JT Realmuto-

Catcher edge.
Is it worth a third rounder?
The argument rages.
I like him at a better price and have drafted him.
By the way, the Realmuto-Hughes video from Jomboy is one of the funniest I have ever seen. Google it.

So there you have it.
The third round.
The way pitchers have fallen and are still falling, I'm betting more than just Corbin will be selected in the third round come March.
Spring Training starts in earnest tomorrow!

Here is something interesting for those that haven't drafted yet....

Middle infielders run strong and deep.
Consider this. According to ADP (Which stands for Average Drafting Performance), there are five Shortstops being drafted early...

Lindor
Turner
Bregman
Story
Tatis

At the bottom of the second and third, a barrage....

Mondesi
Torres
Altuve
Marte
Albies
Bogaerts
Baez
Villar
Hiura
Merrifield
Machado

On average, every team will have a middle infielder by the fourth round.
There are no Slugs in this group.
All have possibilities of five category goodness.
Crazy good year up the middle.

Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
