Our World Ain't Right

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Apr 20, 2020 8:36 am

I scrolled down the television guide with my remote control.
That sentence was a little amusing.
Back in the day, I was the remote control for my Dad. He would bark out the channel and I would turn it on the tv.
"There you go!" " 'Gunsmoke', that's good." " Now, adjust the rabbit ears till I tell you to stop!"
Good times.

Anyway, I was looking through the guide. I found that any baseball game being shown now is 'classic'.
It's a nicer word for 'old' or 'rerun' or 'it ain't what you really want to see'.
Scrolling further, I saw 'Classic Soccer'.
THAT, that made me laugh.
No offense soccer fans, but if my kids or grand kids aren't in a soccer game, it's an easy pass at any level.

Mostly now, my wife has control of the television.
With no baseball, it's hard to watch anything.
Before, I would be watching a game on television and keeping track of 10 others by computer.
Tracking my fantasy players and cussing at my pitching.
Meanwhile, my wife would shake her head and read or do something else.

Now, my wife is mostly in charge of the television, while I read or do something else.
She'll watch the Hallmark Channel.
A Channel from Hell for men.
Contrived love stories that almost make me yearn for classic soccer.

Reading baseball books used to be a good way to pass the time for me.
So did looking up any kind of statistics that interested me.
It could be stats involving players that I was interested in drafting or just interesting stats that I could pass along in these posts.
With the shortened or no season at all this year, that seems meaningless now.
I quit buying the 'Forecaster' a few years ago.
I ordered one after the cancellation of baseball before St Patricks Day.
Thinking, somehow, it would rekindle a flame.
Failure.
It's not the 'Forecaster's fault. It's circumstances fault.

Usually at this time, numbers are flying, games are starting, FAAB is on the mind, and everything is right with the world.
Now, the virus has made me a prisoner of war.
Instead of blaring music, I hear the Hallmark Channel.
Instead of prison bars, I see 'Classic Soccer'.
The days are long and I know that tomorrow will be like today. A Hellish prison indeed.

I look at RotoWorld and other sites by habit.
I know there will be nothing there.
Entering Draft Champions leagues only serves to fool myself for a few days that my picks matter.
I still do.
I WANT to be fooled, dammit!
It lets me fool myself that the draft and all previous drafts matter.
Heck, I drafted in September when the next season was far away. I can draft now, not knowing if there will be a season at all.
But when drafting a guy like Nolan Arenado, we would always use the Rockies environment as the basis for his high selection.
Now, we don't know if he'll be hitting in Colorado, or Arizona, or worse, anywhere at all.
Those should not be fantasy thoughts. We need structure.
We don't have structure.
What I do have is Hallmark movies and Classic Soccer.
Our world ain't right.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
