We Are Sergeant Schultz

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Tue Apr 28, 2020 9:27 am

We are fantasy baseball players. As fantasy baseball players, we do our best to predict the baseball future.
We study, we watch players and games, we have opinions based on anecdotal events and occurrences.
We use facts and lies from the past and current to judge the future.
Enter the virus.

We can hurl most of that study out the window.
Sure, the top players will, for the most part, remain intact, but other players can be questioned to the hilt.
Take Gleyber Torres.
Torres started out the draft season as a solid second rounder.
Now, we find him in both the second and third rounds.
What Torres does is known to all.
His two greatest attributes are his positionality of 2B/SS and the Baltimore Orioles.
As drafters, we know that Torres will keep his positionality.
With the Orioles help, Torres ended the year at .278/96/38/90/5
Without the Orioles, Torres line would be .262/74/25/76/5
Those drafting Torres, depend upon Torres facing the Baltimore Orioles often.

Again, enter the virus,
Here is the thing about the virus and how it pertains to baseball....We don't know nothing.
That's right.
We are all in the same boat.
The Yahoo Kid knows as much as how the virus will effect baseball as NFBC Hall of Famers.
We can read from writers who offer hope in playing in Arizona, or without crowds, or in four states, or not at al, blah, blah, and BLAH.
It all means nothing.
Like Major League Baseball themselves, they can only guess what will be.
We don't like guesses.
If we liked guesses, then the Yahoo Kid would win leagues because we would all be equal.
Guessing at what will be for writers, adds 'views', but offers little else.

None of us know if Gleyber Torres will face the Orioles three times or 10 times.
We DO KNOW that it won't be 19 times.
A full season is becoming out of the question.
And with each passing day, the chances of Torres facing a lot of Orioles pitching shrinks more and more.
I cherry picked Torres for effect, but it involves almost every player.
We don't know how many games will be played.
We don't know where these games will be played.
Heck, we don't know IF games will be played.
We are Sergeant Schultz. We know nothing. Just like EVERYBODY else.

Our society, worldwide, has never been in quarantine all at once.
Never in our history.
Never.
Yet, some people think they have answers.
They offer 'plans' and such. Anything that provides hope.
By offering hope, they think they are doing a service.
The truth is, they are not.
As fantasy players we want something of substance. Opinions are a dime a dozen. Offering hope or not.
We can only ride this thing out, use common sense, and hopefully sooner over later, our lives will come back to a semblance of what it was in the past.
And not one of us knows the impact that will have on Gleyber Torres this year. :)
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
