2020 and 2.7

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Jul 16, 2020 8:25 am

2.7
Each game our players play will be worth 2.7 times the stats of previous seasons.
So, if Mike Trout hits four homers in a game this year, it'll have the same effect as hitting 11 because of the shortened season.
By the same token, we could recover from a miserable 1 INN, 8 ER start from Wade Miley over 162 game season, but those eight earned runs will feel like 21 earned runs this year.

Every at bat and every pitch has 2.7 times the meaning.
In a 162 game season, a player resting would elicit a  response from us.
In a 60 game season, a player resting will elicit a  response from us.
The long game allows mishaps. We can recover from them.
The short game will test us.

Injuries have always been something we deal with.
I remember having a conversation with Todd Zola years ago.
He stated that he was unafraid to draft Jacoby Ellsbury.
His reasoning was that Ellsbury's injuries had all been of a freakish nature.
In short, it wasn't his fault that he was injury prone.
I come from a different direction. I believe that some players (like Ellsbury) are destined to be fantasy traps.
Hello Byron Buxton.

Injuries should be 2.7 times more important this year.
A player missing 10 games last year will be like having a player missing 27 games this year.
ANY IL stint costs a drafter at least 1/6 of the season.
BUT, and this is a big BUT, we have something even worse than injury this year.
A virus.
There is no Jacoby Ellsbury thought process to the virus. Whether it be Todd's or mine.
The virus is like an in-season whammy.
We can only spin the wheel and hope not to get a whammy.
This whammy costs us at least 16 games or more than a quarter of the season when considering 14 days of quarantine and two days of testing negative.
And that's being positive.
The player could be sicker and not come back that fast.
Or, it could be s pitcher who will need to be stretched out yet again.

2020.
Everybody will remember this year. It'll be stories for Grand kids.
It'll be memorable for us too.
We have never had the problems and situations like we'll have in 2020.
At the top, we have 2.7 times the difficulty than past years.
And, if every at bat and pitch has 2.7 times the meaning of past seasons, the luck of the virus may be infinity.
(Normal folks can have the luck of the Irish. We'll take the luck of the virus)

Some say that the 2020 World Series winner should have an asterisk.
I don't know about that.
But in our game, I believe league and Overall winners should be lauded more than in past years.
Our game changes dramatically this year.
And the winners who navigate those changes should be looked at as Kings. Not with an asterisk.
In my mind, those winners will have the boldness of a riverboat gambler, the luck of the virus, and 2.7 times the skill of others.
In a year that nobody will ever forget, 2020.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

But the good news, Dan, is that we get to go head-to-head again (8:00 pm ET on the 23rd). Of course, there are some other no-names in the league like Schroter, Smith, Butler, Schechter, Waggener, Childs/Ferrari and Cha (who I already have in two of my three leagues...yeah!!!).

Gonna be interesting....

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Should be a wild and fun time in that Main Event, Wayne.
In my best 'Sundance Kid', "Who are those guys?"
And like Butch and Sundance, they'll probably be dogging us all year.......

Seriously, lots of noted names, but you know the favorite NFBC mantra which is. ...

"Sombitch, why do I have to be in such a stacked league!".....Oh wait....that's not it, that is what I was just thinking.
Here it is....

"To be the best, you have to beat the best!"

There, that's the ticket.

Now you are talking....still, there is always that first reaction that makes you feel that you are an integral part of an Abbott & Costello routine

"Who's on first?" (OK, valid question for Atlanta)
"What's on second?" (Angels)
"I don't know is on third." (Texas)
"I don't give a darn!" (Shortstop...Baltimore...I mean really, I don't give a darn....)

Thsnks, Dan! An embarrasment of riches. In my three drafts, I have a #3 and two #1's. I will have Acuna in at least one, but have to think about maybe Yelich or Betts for one to "diversify"....good problem to have!
