Trea Turner, 2020 MVP

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Dec 16, 2020 7:53 am

I don't consider myself smart. I can write some. I have some fantasy baseball experience like you. But if you're reading this, you're an NFBC player and probably know a lot about our hobby.
Anyway, when not smart, you say stupid things.
A few years ago, I wrote about how stupid it was to take Trea Turner in the first round.
THAT is how smart I am.
When saying something stupid, there are two things you can do.
You can keep up the front that you are right until proven wrong over and over again, a la Ron Shandler and Mike Trout or you can just come out and admit what a stupid sombitch we are for saying something stupid.
I've let my actions talk louder than my words. I've drafted Turner several times since then.

Turner was taken second overall in a recent draft of mine. I didn't bat an eye.
Is he better than Mookie Betts, Fernando Tatis Jr., Ronald Acuna Jr., Juan Soto, Mike Trout, or the three big pitchers?
We don't know that.
But you know what?
He belongs with them.
In my way of thinking, he would have won the Fantasy MVP last year. There isn't one? What?
I thought in today's society, celebs and athletes need more and more awards ! (sarcasm)

Turner did things no other player matched in our five roto categories.
And you know what?
He did it while disappointing his owners by 'only' stealing 12 bases.
Part of the whole original being stupid about Turner was folks expecting 70 stolen bases from him.
He ain't going to steal 70 bases, folks. I was even right about that.
And really, he doesn't need to steal 70 bases.
Let me give you a rundown.....

Turner hit .335
Only five players in baseball hit .330 or above last year.
Only teammate Soto from that top group.

Turner scored 46 Runs.
Tied for fifth in baseball.
Around him were top first rounders like Tatis Jr., Betts, and Acuna Jr.

Turner hit 12 homers.
Whooda thunk that Turner would ever hit as many homers as he did steal bases and leave his owners happy?
He hit as many homers as 'power man' Cody Bellinger. One less than Soto's 13.

Turner drove in 41 Runs.
15th in baseball!
More than Soto. More than Pete Alonso.
As many as Eloy Jimenez.

Turner stole 12 bases.
Fourth in baseball.
In a 'lesser' year of stealing bases for Turner, Turner still stole more than any other player taken at the top of drafts.

How good was Turner?
No other player came very close to the roto year he had.
He was the ONLY PLAYER to have a .300/40/10/40/10 season
Across the board, he blew other offensive players out of the water in 5 category goodness.

I live in Colorado and I owned Trevor Story in the Main Event last year.
Loved Story. He had a great year. He really did.
But you know what?
Turner beat Story in every category but one last year.....Stolen bases!
Man, I love this hobby!

As said, I was completely wrong about Turner.
The guy can flat out play.
I will continue to draft him and even hope he doesn't do something stupid like trying to steal 70 bases.
He'd probably get hurt before achieving that.
But then again, he'd probably just prove me wrong again.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Was happy to get my first share of Trea this year with 10th pick in my current DC and was thinking of what you wrote previously about Trea when I picked him. Went back and forth between him and Ramirez. Would be nice if Nats can land another big bat for that lineup.

Thanks for the reply, Marc!
I believe WAS will sign a big bat. Soto was getting pitched around and intentionally walked all September.
In August when getting thrown to, he hit 11 homers and walked 13 times.
In September, he walked 28 times with only two home runs.
They have a burgeoning Superstar. But even Superstars can be dealt with when having no protection.
I believe Soto is much more affected by the addition of another bat than Turner.

You got Turner 10th? That is awesome.
Funny how these early drafts already have a pattern in the first round.
The first 11 players, almost always the same. Just in different orders.
Then comes Bellinger, Freeman, Yelich, Bauer, Buehler, Lindor etc...
We punished Ramirez in banishing him from the top of the first round to the bottom of the first or second round last year.
This year, we're doing the same to his teammate, Lindor.

When March comes, I expect that other pitchers like Buehler, Bauer, Scherzer, Giolito, etc will invade the first round and even the top 11.
It's the way we roll as a whole.
Makes we wonder...
Are we smarter drafting the way we are now?
Or does the ravenous appetite for pitching make us smarter in March?
My vote is, now.

Actually I misstated and got Trea with the 9th pick, not the 10th, just as I think you did in one of our earlier drafts together. I'm sticking to 4 hour drafts in deference to my significant other but have been fortunate in having those drafts move along at a decent pace with few if any serious laggards. Kyle Lewis fell to me in the middle of the 12th round of my current draft, which is about 5 rounds later than where I have seen him going previously. I know he fell off big time in September and is not likely to repeat his incredibly hot start to last season, but he's got talent and was hard for me to pass up in the 12th.

In response to your question, I'm with you casting my vote for now. And I, too, am not yet sold on FOMO.
