Crap and Stuff

Nick Niedert starts the first game today.
Never seen him.
With a name like that though, it'd be cool if he threw like Seaver.

One week of games are played.
One Starter has gotten an out in the eighth inning. One. Antonio Senzatela.
Managers are moddlecoddling their Starters like we would a Mint Mickey Mantle card.

The White Sox don't look all that exciting.
Most teams don't.
Maybe I expected too much.
Although, the Royals have been fun to watch...even without Mondesi.

Speaking of Mondesi, I drafted him once on a DC team. ONCE.
Mondesi makes me feel icky when drafting him.
I don't trust him.
I don't trust him to stay healthy. I don't trust him to hit for AVG.
I don't trust him.
An NFBC friend of mine took Mondesi in the third round of a Main Event after his injury was known.
He didn't cry "VALUE", but he did like the price.
We can ALL be bought in fantasy baseball.
At least my friend has an excuse. He drafted Mondesi with an injury discount. I drafted him because I was stupid.

I've already turned off the sound to baseball broadcasts, except for the Mets and A's.
Even the Red Sox booth has turned into cheerleaders for their team. Too bad. They were great when just a two-man operation.
I laughed out loud when the Yankees crew extolled the virtues of Gary Sanchez working hard.
Hard work applies to the field.
Sanchez never hustles on the field. He uses the most minimal energy he can get away with and still be a good teammate.
Broadcasters, at one time were 90 percent true description, 10 percent cheerleader. That has seemingly flip flopped.

Managers have taken the easy road.
Unless having a dyed in the wool Closer, they sell committee.
There is no committee.
They aren't going to use a committee, they just sell it.
In this way, if Mark Melancon fails as a Closer, they can go to Pagan or Pomaranz without Melancon having the stigma of losing the job.
Look at Toronto. Merryweather is the guy. Jordan Romano never 'lost' the job. Because officially, he never had it.
Same in Kansas City with Holland.

Holland, Taijuan, France, German...Sorry, Country jag.

This will be the ninth season in a row that James Paxton will not have thrown in 30 games.
Yet, he remains a high draft pick for us.
Why?
How many times do we have to get hit in the head before we avoid the punch?

I am very risk-averse.
I thought it was crazy when Tatis Jr. was taken as a top three pick in most drafts.
I thought it was crazy when the Padres signed him for eternity.
He has played 100 games in a season one time.
One time.
He exudes talent. Love watching him play.
But, their has to be a correlation between talent and dependability before tagging somebody a superstar.
Will I miss out on Tatis Jr's first full break out season?
Yep.
But I need proof that he can have a full break out season.

I did not draft Juan Soto once among my 30 teams.
I believe he is great.
And I realize I was probably the only NFBC drafter not looking to draft Soto.
I owned him last year. I hated his last month of the season.
He loves and prides himself in not going 'out of the zone'.
Not like Joey Votto. But enough to wear on an owner.
Mix that with pitchers not really wanting any part of Soto and I believe that Soto does not become the fantasy star that most envision.
What he WILL become is an analytical darling. In a sense, replacing Votto as the God analytics pray to five times a day.
His walks and OBP will go through the roof.
Bryan Kenney will have wet dreams about Soto.
Meanwhile, we will expect more in fantasy.

Are Yahoo Kids doing some of these write-ups for the Rotoblurbs?
Most are laughable.
Apparently, getting 10 swings and misses is laudable even if allowing six earned runs.
An increase in velocity is the lead story for a pitcher, the seven runs allowed, backburnered.
Sometimes, a player just sucks. Don't sugarcoat it. Say that he sucked.
Believe me, if owning that player, the readers have already said it.

30 teams?!?! LOL. I hope you are retired (work wise)

Tatis - wanted very badly to own a share on one of my big money teams; however the shoulder ding in the spring caused me to back away a little. Passed on him at 2 hole 2 times. Passed in both super auctions.

Soto - loved the talent; however I was not taking an OFer in the first round

Paxton - pissed I didn’t acquire him on any teams. After my last draft was over, i thought it was Probably a mistake on my part for not having him ranked higher.

Yes. I got a little carried away with little to do during my first full year of retirement. Plus had a few health problems that led me to more drafts to keep my mind on something else. I limited my FAAB teams to three, so it's manageable.

I just can't draft Tatis till he proves health. I'm willing to miss out on that first big breakout.

Why not an OF in the first round? Would you have taken Acuna Jr if falling?

Next year will be the 10th straight year that Paxton does not get 30 Starts.
For this year, I felt the jig was up when the Mariners mostly just threw him in Sim Games in Spring Training.
No pitcher throws maximum effort during these games.
I believe by going this route, the Mariners increased the chance of injury for Paxton.
Undraftable.

hopefully the health problems aren't problems anymore :)

have fun with the 30 teams Dan!!! from a fantasy baseball perspective, i cant wait for the day i retire so i can take on more teams and compete against everyone without having major time commitments that dont involve fantasy baseball  i used to live and breathe this stuff. not anymore. hour on monday to set lineups, hour on fridays and 5-6 hours on sunday to do faab.

no OF in the first round was the result of liking many OF going later than they should. tried to grab those players and prioritized the scarcer positions in my book (SP and SS). ended up with Degrom twice, trea turner twice, yu darvish once

This is among he strangest freakin' blurbs I think I have ever read.
These blurbs are supposed to tell us what the player did to warrant a blurb, right?
Look at this one...The writer tells us what happened in five or six words, then writes an essay in dismissing it......

"Bryan Reynolds, who went 0-for-5 on Thursday, has five hits in 14 career at-bats against Saturday starter, Zach Davies.
He never went more than one start without reaching base as a rookie in 2019, when he slashed .314/.377/.503 in 546 plate appearances. Avoiding prolonged slumps, like his 5-for-44 start in 2020, will go a long way toward getting the outfielder, who never hit under .300 prior to last summer, back on track in 2021."

It looks like it was written by Reynolds Mom or more likely, an overly optimistic owner of Reynolds who can't wait to turn the page on an 0-5 night.
It amuses the heck out of me.
I can't remember his name, but in the 1950's, a young player was called up by the Yankees. The Yankees were short handed and the player played in both ends of a doubleheader.
He went 0-8.
The player knocked on Manager Casey Stengel's door after getting showered and dressed. Entering, he told Stengel that he hardly ever went two games without getting a hit in the minors. He told Stengel that he would see a much better hitter than he showed that day.
Casey responded, "Well Son, you're probably right about that, we're sending you back down to the Minors."
In one sentence, Stengel showed that he didn't care much about the players past and even less about promises for the future.
The writer of the Anderson blurb should do the same. Anderson went 0-5. Deal with it.
