No News Is Good News

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Tue Feb 01, 2022 10:52 am

Allow me to go off topic here for a bit....Sorry in advance

I'm old.
So old that when being a kid, I was afraid for America.
And of course, being a kid, for my own mortality.
The neighbor next door was having a bomb shelter installed under his house. He told my Dad that he was crazy for not doing the same.
My Dad was both pragmatic and cheap.
If something hasn't happened, it hasn't happened. Being pro-active at the cost of $$$ was not a thought.
It was the Cuban missile crisis filling our news.
Russia was going to attack. It was true because that is what was reported.
It never happened.
Our neighbor spent a lot of money for what may have been the first real 'Man Cave'.

Fast forward to today.
The first four headlines I see today went something like this....

'Bracing for Another Covid Variant'

'Ukraine and NATO Await Russia Intent'

'Tom Brady Retiring?'

Major League Baseball in Jeopardy of Losing Games'

Shades of the past.
All four of these 'stories' are not stories at all.
They are all items that haven't happened yet.
Inflaming. Taunting. Worrying. And many more emotions stirred.
Being old, it's tiresome.

Let me focus on that last item.
Nobody on this earth knows if we will lose MLB games this season.
We could. Then again, we could not.
Why do these so-called reporters headline that it is a possibility?
Why not headline that NOT missing games is also a possibility?
Again, it is because they WANT to stir these emotions in us.
It's tiresome.

I commend both MLB and the Union for keeping their negotiations from the press.
When taking their problems to the press, it usually means that the two sides are truly upset with the other.
Since they aren't arbitrating through the press, the press feels it is their job to paint what they feel on the negotiations.
Thus, most of it is negative.
Like most 'news'.
Why report on the past when we can scare the bejeezus out of folks with the future?
C'mon Man.
Quit being tiresome.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Since the media is making the future, the news of the day...Let's do it here in the NFBC

"Live Event Drafters Possibly Getting Screwed"

That would be a media headline of today. Let me explain.

The Live Events are scheduled for March 19 in Chicago, New York, and Las Vegas. And again, March 26 in Las Vegas.
There will also be online drafts before, during, and after those dates leading up to Opening Day on March 31.
Except one thing.
The CBA.
As we all know, baseball season may be delayed.
The timing of that delay could really effect live drafters.
Let's say that a deal is struck on March 15.
The first week of Live Events will only know the first bits of transactions. There will be a flurry of transactions for at least three weeks.
Also, there are positions to be sorted out.
Let's take Closers.
Closers are undecided on more than half the MLB teams.
Supply and demand has Closers going at ridiculous rates in pre-Main Event drafts.
If there are few or no transactions made before live drafts, these Closers will probably still go at stupid prices.
Fast forward to later drafts.
We know, mostly, who is going to start out Closing for most teams.
Drafters do not have to spend a high pick on a Raisel Iglesias to secure their Closer.
Heck, Iglesias probably wouldn't be taken till the fourth or fifth round.
That first week of drafters will not have the knowledge that the next week's drafters will have.
And the next weeks drafters will not have the knowledge that the later online drafters will have.
Worse, what if the agreement comes later than March 15?
Say, March 25?
This effectively screws ALL Live Event drafters.

I'm not trying to undercut the Live Drafts.
To me, they are what sets us apart from other fantasy leagues and sites.
I love the live drafts and have met so many of you good folks there.
At the same time, there would be an uneven playing field for live drafters.
Main Event drafts are not like Draft Champions where earlier or later drafts each have their own benefits.
A Main Event has 30 rounds where each pick is precious.
The later the CBA is not reached, the more unlevel that playing field becomes for live drafters.
It could be a HUGE problem.
One solution may be to halt all Main Event drafts leading up to Opening Day.
I don't think that will happen.
That would be taking resources away from the NFBC.
Something we all do not want. And something we all know, the NFBC does not want. But, it would level the playing field.
It's a problem.
And I think it will grow to be a larger problem if the CBA keeps dragging on.
Eventually, it will have to be addressed.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
