Shits and Giggles

Being an NFBC participant is hard.

1. We all have lives. Real and fantasy. Maintaining a balance between the two is difficult sometimes.

2. Time. We only have so much. Both in real and fantasy life. Team must be picked carefully.

3. Money. Like time, we only have so much. And again, teams must be picked carefully.

4. FAAB. FAAB is our mistress. Love/Hate. We hate that we put so much time into it. Love that it can be beneficial for our teams.

Now, you may think I'm going to talk about each of these items, but I'm not.
I know my audience. I know that you have already been through all the things listed above.
It's part of the NFBC. It's part of Life vs. Fantasy. It's part of all of us.

Instead, I'll speak of something not listed......Skill vs. Luck.

We're all here for the same reason. We want to win. We want to win badly. And while winning, we want to know that we beat the best competition possible.
To do that takes a lot of skill and luck.
In our minds we want the skill to be more at the forefront than luck.
Luck is great. We love luck. We want all the luck we can get.
BUT, when we win a league, we want to believe that it was our skills that obtained that league title.

NFBC games are designed in a way that skill is the overriding factor in winning a league title.
It's why we're here.
Most of us know that there is no contest like the Main Event. It separates the Men from the Boys.
We play other contests for shits and giggles. We play the Main Event like it's life or death.

I was an avid Fantasy Football player for years.
Then came a time for me where luck had passed skill in winning the contest.
Many don't feel that way and that's fine. To each their own.
And leads into our new contest, 'The Gladiator'.
It's simple, really.
Draft a full team in 23 rounds and forget it. No FAAB. No lineups. Everything counts.

To me, this is where Fantasy Baseball shakes hands with Fantasy Football.
Luck looms large with this concept.
Sure, the draft is all important as in every contest. But from there on, it becomes more about who takes the field more and THAT is always a crapshoot.
I admit, I have a slight bias against most best ball events.
I like even a modicum of control over my teams.
We're men. We like to fix things.
There is no 'fixing' a Gladiator Draft. It's more of a 'Convenience Draft'.
The draft is shorter with just 23 rounds and then....nothing.
Just look at Standings and hope and pray that you have more healthier players than other teams. Or even an unforeseen wrinkle like a PEDS suspension or even a death. Nothing like seeing that player on your roster each week!

I listed four things above that we, as NFBC players, have to contend with on a daily basis.
'The Gladiator' should be right up my alley.
It is perfect for all four of those items.
But it isn't, really.
It gives me no control. No feeling like I've accomplished something, even if winning.
I know it's going great guns and a lot of folks love the concept. I do love that!
I like anything that helps the NFBC.
But for me, luck will far override skill in this game. Premium Shits and Giggles.

One thing to note...
I haven't drafted a DC in a month and just got into one yesterday.
WOW!
'The Gladiator' has really influenced the default setting.
Maybe we should have a default separate for that contest? Or maybe not.
I've always been a fan of as little default as possible forcing each drafter to make choices not based on the will of others.
Anyway, that decision should be made by somebody smarter than myself.

After being laughed at by John Pausma, I have to put this statement on record for all to see.

I believe this coming year will be the first time EVER that a Closer is drafted before a Starter in a Main Event.

Just want to be on record, be it for Nostradamas sake or be it for my stupidity.....

Ha. You might be right! And....I was laughing with you, not at you. Who can figure closers out? I know it won't be you taking a closer before a SP!

It's a hard call. On one hand you have fewer guys that are the "true closers" so logically those should be worth exponentially more. On the other hand, the track record of closers / perceived closers is abysmal. Takes some courage either way. Such a fun game.

I am a fan of the Gladiator format. It lets me get the drafting itch scratched and adds zero stress for the season.

All good.
I am definitely in the minority there. It is wildly popular.
Just not my cup of tea.
