This year I will and I know I'll need the time so there you go. You get the time and it is your right to do what you want with it.

folks are apologizing (either direct or indirect) in anticipation of using all of their allotted time to select a player?!? amazing.

Frankly, I was pretty stunned at viper's comments. Using your time can be a huge advantage, as can calling out a name immediately. Depends on the situation--ZMan from NFFC is really the expert on this.

I love it when certain league mates consistently use the full alotment of time so I know exactly how long I have to run to that little mini bar and get another drink.

I believe I was commenting on how fast the FIRST round could go. That is the only round that could be totally "programmed". Once round two comes, things change based on your prior pick(s) and each draft's dynamics. Heck, I have been known to wait for most of my time to "catch my breath" and catch up on paperwork. How often have you seen the 3rd guy in a draft take his entire allotment of time even though the first two picks were totally as expected. It is as if he assumed one of the top two guys would be there or something.

In fact, I believe there's about a 5% chance that the ARod/Pujols blockade will be broken up. After watching the infamous "New York 8" in the NFFC have Manning go 1st and Culpepper go 2nd, I won't be surprised by anything.

so you are saying that if you had the #3 pick and either pujols or arod was still available, you would need to consider who you wanted - assuming they were your the top two on your lists. Each person may have a different top 15 list but I still don't see how prior selections would effect your personal decision in round 1. Once again, this is ONLY round 1.

In this example, the #3 guy would probably spend half of their allotted time slapping themselves in the face to make sure they weren't dreaming
The delays would come if MULTIPLE unexpected picks came in, and then only later in the first round. The guys drafting in the middle of the first round in the NFFC NY8 league were probably rethinking their strategy when the 1st and 2nd picks were surprises. The guy at #3 had a no-brainer with LT2.

Viper,
I would consider myself someone who is pretty prepared, but if Pujols or ARod dropped to me at #3, I would indeed use the alotted time. The reason being, my spreadsheets do a lot of tracking and although the pick itself is a no brainer, I will need to time to readjust the rest of my draft because of that change. I would prefer to know nothing else is happening in the draft during my alotted time while I have time to think it through. If I just quickly say yeah this is easy, ARod, then now I need to get back to keeping track of everyone's picks and try and think things through. Make sense?

I guess my thought is that unless you have the #1 pick then you never know who may be available in the first round. I would always hope that someone slipped. I agree that the remainder of the draft is effected by that first pick but whether you took speed, power or an SP in round one, its imapct on a round two selection would likely have been considered. That said, if I had the #15 pick and both Crawford and Santana were undrafted, I would have to think a while. I think you need some power early and have never even considered that combination on players. Crawford is the only spped guy who was make me pause.

Just for fun - My 2 cents:
I wish everyone took the full allotted time. In fact, if they didn't I wish the clock for the next player wouldn't start until the unused time expired. I'm in no rush, I love draft day, I track a ton of players on old fashioned sheets and I like to take my time. I'm spending good money here and don't want to rush myself or anyone else.
Like I said, just my 2 cents.
Pete

I disagree with you. If every owner took there alloted time for each pick and you include the breaks after rounds 10 and 20, you are looking at an 8 hour draft. The reason we play this game on this level is because we enjoy it and know something about how to play. If you really know who you want, throw it out there. There isn't any reason to draw this out unless the team right before takes your player. Keep the flow going. Last year our NY draft took just over 4 hours and every owner was on top of there selections. I think overall, this makes the 30 rounds go by allot smoother. Just my opinion.

For $1,250 You are correct. But, Just because you take the whole 60 seconds doesn't mean the player you end up drafting was any better or worse then the name you originally were going to go with. Thats all I meant by it.
