Invitational DC Leagues?

Post by Deadheadz » Thu Dec 05, 2013 6:14 am

It's occurred to me that what could drive more interest in early Draft Champions leagues would be a limited number of signup lists that would each include an "NFBC Personality" as the figurehead "host" of the league.

For example, maybe you could have the "Gekko Invitational DC League" list. People who know and love (?) his style of drafting and pace would add their names to the list being formed here in the General forum. Once there were 15 names of like minded managers, they would all receive a special alert once the next new DC was registering so that all 15 could get on that list (hopefully) before someone not on the list was able to register.

With a little more work on Greg's part, the process could be made simpler by manually filling the league as a private league.

It doesn't have to be Gekko hosting the first one, it could be Poopy Tooth or Bronx Yankees or me. I'm sure there are people who have drafted with me that would like another chance to exploit my newbie drafting flaws (can you say 'easy money'?) or at least know they'll be in a league that might get done in 11-12 days just like DC 1 this year. Having most of the managers willing to exchange cell phone numbers allows us to sent SMS text alerts to each other when a manger isn't in the draft room but goes on the clock to pick.

And for those who like a slower pace, maybe someone could host a league specifically for those who want to take advantage of the clock and drag the draft out to 4 weeks. If you can find 15 managers who want that, why not?

Currently we don't really have a lot of control over who we're drafting against in a league, other than looking at who's already signed up and knowing from past experience how they've drafted before. But you'll see many names you don't know and can't predict their style or pace.

Invitational leagues would give each such league it's own personality and potential signees could decide if they like the implied style and pace of the league or wait for another. Or just take your chances with a mostly random list of names on whatever current DC is registering.

Thoughts? Comments?

Suggestions on who could host the first Invitational DC League?

I think it would be great if Rich Gannon would host the first Invitational DC League.

Great idea. Kind of the same thought process that was behind the creation of the MTM Super and Max's 1000 DC. I'm all for creating one with it's own unique flavor based upon the personalities and players involved. I have one in mind already. 8-)

Actually Invitational leagues like Shawn's SCL and Doughy & Jules' Hot Tub preceeded even those events you named Mikey. And neither of those earlier Invitationals had a built-in dead money spot like the MtM. :P In all seriousness, those were tough leagues. I wonder whatever happened to them.

Thanks, that photo made me lose my appetite for dinner. The most frightening part is that it looks like women's underwear.

Yes, they're the kind that Dobies wears. However he did confide In me that he is very self-conscious of unsightly panty bulge :P

Not much interest in the cell phones only league.

I've noticed what seems to slow down the pace in some leagues is having more teams with two managers. When one is available to draft but won't pick until he clears it with his co-manager it does slow things down.

It's a slow draft so I shouldn't complain.

Will anyone else start up an invitation league signup? KJ Duke? Beuller? Anyone?

Yes, I'll host probably two or three 'Fast Slow drafts'. One in January, one in February, maybe one in March, like last year.
Requiring a cell phone or requiring anything is probably not the way to go for you, Deadheadz.
I don't own one, myself.
Last year in those drafts, we were done in five, six, and seven days.
There were also express drafts last year with a 4 hour clock.
These usually come after the Christmas season since most folks are busier at this time of year with shopping, parties, and Bowl games.
Would you like to be in the January 'fast slow' ?

Four hour clocks sounds good to me. Are there different express DCs? One person told me they were in a DC with a 1 minute clock.

I'll watch for signup lists in January.

Yes, there are.
The one minute drafts filled by the week last year. I believe most drafts were on Friday or Saturday nights.
The 4 hour express implies that it wants its drafters to be quicker.
If getting 15 drafters of like minds, the clock should never be a factor.

I see no reason for you to wait until January
You know if you set it up they will come(ok I will)
heck let's get one of them knocked out by Christmas :D
between you and Mikey they never take more than 7 days even during the hectic times.
