As a Yankees fan, this is crushing news. The Yankees will be a very different team without #2. What an amazing career. Also, to play 20 years for the Yankees without any scandals, bad publicity, etc., in the bright lights of New York is a testament to his character. (Alright, there was a little fiasco about not remembering all of the women he slept with and giving out "duplicate" parting gifts, but c'mon, tough to blame a guy for that!) Truly the end of an era. While he should be elected to the Hall of Fame unanimously, and there is no rational reason why anyone would not vote for him, he doesn't have a chance of getting 100% of the vote. Hell, I was shocked how many votes Maddux did not receive - still haven't heard any decent explanation as to why he was left off a single ballot. Personally, as a Yankees fan, he's been my favorite player for almost the last two decades and I will miss watching him on a daily basis. He truly had a flare for the dramatic and never shied away from or wilted under the pressure (unlike some of his former teammates).

Also, to supplement Tom's list for the sake of accuracy, let's not forget: Laura Dutta (2000 Miss Universe), Adriana Lima (Victoria Secret model), and, most recently, Hannah Davis (SI Swimsuit model), among many others. Hell, if you could live anyone else's life, his hasn't been too shabby so far.

To have the career he had, 17 seasons out of 19 in the playoffs, almost Every post season record, let alone many Yankee team records, 4 World Series wins, maybe 5 this year and most of all, No one has accomplished what he did, considering his whole career was during the Steroid Era. If he does'nt get 100%, hard to ever see anyone getting it. He's more about the Fabric of the game than most give him credit for. His legacy of doing it without Roids will grow over the next 100 years. He did it his Way, the right way, the clean way and the Way his parents wanted him to. He listened to his parents and I am sure, when all is said, He will credit them first and foremost!

It's another reason why baseball's HOF voting is often so moronic. But the precedent has clearly been set. Even though Jeter is clearly a first-ballot HOF'r someone won't vote for him just to keep the streak alive.

homer much? no one will argue he isn't a hall of famer. but there have been much better players that didn't get 100% of the vote so it would be absurd to think jeter would. and really, does it matter? he'll get his 90%, have his number retired, move to an island with whoever is currently ms universe, and be a very happy man.

This may be unpopular here but why announce right now? After that Mo "look at me" retirement tour I thought he may have announced retirement after the season. Does he really need gifts and a ceremony for every ballpark he visits. The fact that he had to announce this on social media "facebook" screams egomaniac. He's not an NFL QB or star NBA player. These are team achievements. He's already received his rewards for these...with rings. Under this premise, Bob Horry is a lock for the hoops HoF. How many regular season MVPs does he have? If he played his career for the Pirates with the same numbers, would we be having a debate on whether he should get 100% of vote, or whether he should be an HoFer?

Dan- Many things go into being a Great Ball player. Even more makes a person a A good person, Jeter embodies many good things about life and Sport! As for his getting 100% It's just my gut feeling based on many factors on what he ahs accomplished and what he will accomplish over the next 6 years.

Growing up in Chicago (and initially feeling Jeter was just a product of the NY hype machine), I never really appreciated what a great leader Jeter was and how much he meant to those great Yankee teams until I read "The Yankee Years," by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci. The reverance, according to the book, that his teammates had for him was so telling of his character and so telling as to how vital his leadership was to those teams. To me, he is the epitome of a winner, a leader, a Captain. In this day and age of look-at-me chest thumping, of showing up your opponent, where we spend hours debating the Richard Sherman crap, NEVER, in 19 years, has Derek Jeter sought the spotlight nor shown up an opponent. In a cliched way, he merely let his play on the field speak for itself.

Of all the championships and the iconic images of Jeter ingrained in my head, what I will always try to remember about him is his day in,day out consistency, and, most especially, the CLASS, with which he carried himself.

Derek J-E-T-E-R (in Bob Seppard voice).....The Captain....A Legendary Career....a Winner...a Class Act. Derek Jeter, a job well done, a career well-played, a life well-lived. A Legend in our time.
