Re: Player of the week: 80's/ 90's scrub
I remember this guy from the early 80's Expos teams and thought his overall numbers were a lot better. So that earns him a spot on this list. Also of interest -- I notice an 8 year gap between 1983 and 1991, when he returned from a long layoff/retirement/whatever, and had some at bats with the Royals. Not sure I"ve ever seen that big of a gap on someone's stat sheet.

Wanted to find a closer to add to this list, and it's not that easy to find one. But Mike Timlin is as good as any. Not that his career was 'bad' in any way, as he pitched for 18 years and that's nothing to sneeze at. But a closer look at the numbers shows: just an average ERA and WHIP over the entire time. Only a couple of big save seasons. And quite a few years in the middle of his career where if you had drafted him for relief help, you would have been disappointed in the pick.

This guys' stat sheet is interesting. 6 years of average baseball, a great year in 1989 along with some MVP votes, then dropped off the planet, playing 9 games in 1990 and none after that point. I can't remember what the story was here.

Yup. After killing Braves pitching, he becomes a Brave, many hoped he would solidify the 1B, be a solid contributor, and, one year prior to the 1991 miracle season, develops vertigo and cannot stay on the field.TOXIC ASSETS wrote:This guys' stat sheet is interesting. 6 years of average baseball, a great year in 1989 along with some MVP votes, then dropped off the planet, playing 9 games in 1990 and none after that point. Of course, the Braves went out and picked up Sid Bream. The rest is, as they say, history.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Here's an interesting stat sheet. This guy's career covered all of the 80s and most of the 90's. Props for longevity, but as far as helping a fantasy baseball team --- forget it. Very low strikeout totals, a career losing record, and an average ERA and WHIP over the entire career. Looks like first half of career was a starter but then converted over to relief after 1987.

Sept 1980:
Honeycutt was struggling and thought he needed extra help. He taped a thumb tack to a finger on his glove hand. When he got a new ball he would take off his glove and rub it up, including a little extra cut.
Except at one point he forgot about the tack and tried to wipe his brow with the off hand. He opened up a cut on his forehead and the umpires found the tack on his hand.
He was suspended for 10 games

My recollection of Esasky is he had vertigo and it affected his play. I don't remember if it was a long term thing, though I beleive it was. The other thing that affected his career was the 4 foot hole in his swing!!

OK as the season rolls on another Saturday is here so here is this week's player.
If you had him in 2003, pat yourself on the back and nominate yourself for the fantasy hall of fame. Great year there, but the rest of the career -- I - Don't - Think - So.

OK with the season winding down and me up early this morning, I check out the following guy's stat line. Like many of these guys, he had one or two nice seasons. In this case it's 1986, you have to like those numbers. But for the entire career....a .500 pitcher with an average WHIP.

Why not bring it back....try to keep some of the old time average players in people's memory......
Who remembers this guy? He's now been retired almost 30 years. A guy who hit 208 home runs and had a nice 'overall' career, but a closer look at the numbers shows he did most of his damage in a few really good seasons like 1982. I am remembering maybe some drug issues?
