A Team Worse Than Yours

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Tue Apr 25, 2017 11:15 am

Think your fantasy team is bad?
Are you feeling down because of too many injuries or under performance?
Let's help you out!

Three weeks into the season and drafting out of the eighth spot, I will build a team that is worse than yours.
It's a mindless draft, meaning that all picks have to be adp-driven and available to the eighth spot each round.
I will guarantee that this bad boy will make your team look wonderful :D

The comments could have been made by the drafter on draft day....

First Round- Josh Donaldson
Donaldson, MVP and close to MVP the last two years. Can't miss.

Second Round- Starling Marte
50 stolen bases and if only he could find a way to hit with more power!

Third Round- Gary Sanchez
He was that guy that was so good last year. I remember that guy.

Fourth Round- Justin Verlander
He's Back!

Fifth Round- Jonathon Lucroy
Ooooh, what VALUE! Lucroy fell to the fifth round. Whoopee!

Sivth Round- David Price
Donaldson, Marte, Sanchez, Verlander, and Lucroy hardly ever get hurt!
I can afford to wait for Price! Verlander and Price. Yummy!

Seventh Round- Kenta Maeda
National League Team. Contending team. Pitchers Park.
What can possibly go wrong?

Eighth Round- Javier Baez
This team needs some infield positionality. Baez could go 25-25 this year!

Ninth Round- Byron Buxton
This team needs some speed. Buxton could break out and have a mammoth year.
At least, that's what a lot of writers said after looking at September of last year.

Tenth Round- Francisco Rodriguez
I'm no fool. I'm taking my Closers here. Stable. Have the job. Secure.

Eleventh Round- Sam Dyson
I'm no fool. I'm taking my Closers here. Stable. Have the job. Secure.

Twelth Round- Adrian Gonzalez
Can't believe I got a stud 1B this late. VALUE

Thirteenth Round- Joc Pederson
Another 25-25 possibility. He went 30-30 in the minors, right?

Fourteenth Round- Greg Bird
I am killing it! If Bird hits as many homers each month as in Spring training, he'll be a monster!

Fifteenth Round- Garrett Richards
Throwing well in Spring Training. Hidden VALUE

So, let's take a look at our team so far....

C- Gary Sanchez
C- Jonathon Lucroy
1B- Adrian Gonzalez
2B- Javier Baez
3B- Josh Donaldson
CI- Greg Bird
OF- Starling Marte
OF- Byron Buxton
OF- Joc Pederson

SP- Justin Verlander
SP- David Price
SP- Kenta Maeda
SP- Garrett Richards

CL- KRod
CL- Sam Dyson

This team a chance to win it all!!!

16th Round- Joe Ross
He was quietly darned good last year. No reason to change!

17th Round- Leonys Martin
I can't believe I'm getting a 15/24 guy in the 17th round. Can you say 'VALUE'?

18th Round- Victor Martinez
Sure, he is U only, but had to take him here. Need Power.

19th Round- Orlando Arcia
Speed is the thing here. He has the job for the next 15 years.

20th Round- Hisashi Iwakuma
My pitching staff is strong!

21st Round- Collin McHugh
My Starters are set!

22nd Round- Brandon Moss
Positionality and Power. I like that in a player.

23rd Round- Alcides Escobar
I need a MI. Escobar will be at the top of the lineup.

24th Round- Danny Valencia
More Positionality and Power!

25th Round- Luke Weaver
With Reyes Tommy John'ed, he should get a lot of starts.

26th Round- Lucas Giolito
Who else do the White Sox throw?

27th Round- Jose Berrios
My bench of Starters may rival other team's starters by June!

28th Round- Melvin Upton Jr.
Power/speed this late? Sign me up!

29th Round- Cody Bellinger
I want this guy for later in the season.

30th Round- Brett Lawrie
Versatility and he was a top 10 rounds pick....

This poor fella thought he had a real challenger. Truth was, it challenged him to keep players on the field.
He lost one player to steroids.
He lost five players to the disabled list
He 'lost' four players because they stayed in the minors.
He lost three players because they were DFA'd
And all of his other players have under performed.

Here are his averages, even if he could play all 30 players...

Offense- .185/4 runs/2/3 of a homer/ 3 rbi/1/2 of a sb per player

Pitchers- 6,83/ 3 Wins/71 K's/ 6 Saves/ 1.60 WHIP and that is totals for the whole staff.

Remember, it could always be worse! :D

Tomorrow, we'll do the BEST possible April team in a similar set-up....
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Thanks, Dan. As a recovering former member of the Madison Bumgarner fan club, that did make me feel a little better.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I guess I missed something. But if somebody took this post as insulting, don't.

I drafted Bumgarner, Sanchez, Bradley Jr, Frazier, and Jankowski...all of whom have hit the dl.
I've also drafted Schimpf and Inciarte, and Hosmer who have woefully under performed.
To put a cherry on top, I drafted Bellinger but had to drop him with all the injuries piling up.
This was a reminder to myself as well as anybody else that things could be worse!
Nothing more.

I promosed a 'Best Team' for today.
I don't know weather it is the perfect team, but it would certainly be number one in the Main Event Overall right now.
Lets have a look.

1/8 Bryce Harper
I'll just state the names and a comment or two. It's too easy to say 'Harper is raking with hard hit balls, blah, blah, blah.
Ouch, just re-read that. "Raking with hard hit balls sounds painful.

2/23 Freddy Freeman
Freeman or Goldy. I'm thinking Freddy has better stats at the end of the year and is the firstest first baseman taken next year.

3/38 Daniel Murphy
Why isn't it just 'Dan'? Can you imagine 'Frederick Freeman? Lighten up DanIEL!

4/53 Christian Yelich
In defiance of Yelich's name, the Mid-East is holding tryouts and will re-name their best player 'Koran'.

5/68 Craig Kimbrel
Arodis Chapman has thrown six innings this year. Two per week. More than 20 relievers have more k's.
Brad Brach has the same amount of Saves.

6/83 Jose Ramirez
Anybody notice how little 'value' I am getting with these picks?

7/98 Zack Greinke
Our first starting pitcher!

8/113 Adam Eaton
A religous team name on another site...'Adam Eaton Eve'

9/128 Dallas Keuchel
Nickname- 'Cowboy'

10/143 James Paxton
Again, why not 'Jim'? Jimmy...Jim Jim Joree

11/158 Jake Lamb
If Jake Lamb was batting for Atlanta, would it be the 'Tomahawk Chop' or the 'Lamb Chop'?

12/173 Eric Thames
Wink Wink Eric

13/188 Marcell Ozuna
Easy to forget

14/203 Michael Brantley
Shouldering the load

15/218 Greg Holland
Luckily, he didn't have to change his name to 'Nederlands'

16/233 Jacoby Ellsbury
Three weeks and not an injury. Waiting for the other shoe...

17/248 Dylan Bundy
No relation to Theodore...or Al

18/263 Chris Owings
Surprised AZ didn't trade him too...

19/278 Ervin Santana
Magic

20/293 Gio Gonzalez
Better than any Mets pitcher?

21/308 Steven Souza Jr
Better hitter than John Phillip

22/323 Mike Leake
Porcelloian

23/338 Jett Bandy
Part of the dandy Bandy/Pina package

24/353 Ryan Zimmerman
Dylan is a famouser 'Zimmerman'

25/368 Wade Miley
For real?

26/383 Mark Reynolds
Ian Who?

27/398 Robinson Chirinos
With Lucroy in a contract year, does Texas send him packing to make more playing time for Chirinos?
Addition by subtraction at the trade deadline AND prospects?

28/413 Taylor Motter
Hello Motter, Hello Fotter...only the old will get that

29/428 Miguel Gonzalez
That's right. Two pitchers named Gonzalez and no hitters by that name. Who knew?

30/443 Brad Brach
The Nats should come calling...

So, there you are.
A crappy team and draft on paper before the year started.
Now, gold.

Of course, all of this will change.
By the end of May, some of these players will be laughable as players on our roster.
Which ones?
THAT is what keeps us so intrigued........
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

I've pretty much stopped caring and commenting about the spelling/grammatical errors in Dan's posts but the one today made me wonder if he too was affected by all the rain-outs yesterday and today.

Had to chuckle at that one.

Keep up the good work Dan. You're hitting over .950

Where is the "like" button for this post. Perfectly stated, JP.

You never speak of baseball.
Most posts are to make negative comments.
You've been warned about this behavior in the past.

Greg, is there any way he can be removed?

I'm sorry you see it that way Dan.
My intent was to point out how cute it was you used "weather" after 4 games were rained out. Not trying to be negative.

I'll keep my comments on baseball but honestly I don't know as much about it as you guys.

yes- dan is the man. i await your chris sale post. i have noticed that: since sale is with "the sox that matter" most of these punk writers and broadcasters act like what he is doing now is new. i also said that he was pitching to contact last year and all off season i read that wasn't true- he velo was down etc. etc. ya- right. how does he look now when he isn't pitching to contact? If you can't tell the difference- you know NOTHING about baseball. i also read all winter how he is now "with the sox that matter" and many more runs would be scored. ya- right. the sox better keep an eye on him because if they let him keep throwing this way that arm may blow up- but i do love watching it.

For years, Sale has been diminished by baseball fans and fantasy players.
"Nobody can pitch like that without arm problems"
"He doesn't win enough games"
"He's a head case"
Blah Blah Blah.
What he is, is a damned good pitcher.
A dominant pitcher that never seems to get his due. Even from a fantasy group that craves dominance.
They want to put Corey Kluber or Noah Syndergaard ahead of him.
Why?
I don't know.
Neither have proven that they are a better pitcher than Sale.
Kluber is known as 'a winner'.
Syndergaard, more press for more velocity.
Did you know that Sale has won more games ? (Sale- 75-52, Kluber 61-45)
That Sale is three years younger than Kluber ?(Sale, 28 Kluber, 31)?
That Syndergaard pitches for the Mets?
More velocity and pitching for the Mets, presents a larger worry about health than Sale's delivery.

For my money, Sale has been THE pitcher to watch in baseball this year.

Yep, I had Syndergaard and Kluber ranked ahead of Sale this year. My thinking: I thought last year's Sale, pitching to contact more than in the past, was a very good but not great pitcher and, quite frankly, I wanted the strikeouts. Sale has done it long enough that I am not fazed by his unusual motion or last year's scissors tirade (which, if anything, made him endearing to me because I thought the White Sox were at least as much at fault and it showed how much he cared about winning and pitching his best even for a bad team). I also was a little nervous as to how he would do pitching in Fenway as a lefty (different pitchers to be sure, but Price had a tough first year in Boston as have others). Well, as with a lot of things, I appear to have been dead wrong. Sale, the aggressive strikeout pitcher, is back and back with a vengeance. Fenway seems to be having no ill effects on him, to be sure. Strangely, Sale's biggest "weakness" this year is a noticeable lack of run support from the Red Sox (this sure has been a strange year so far). I still love Thor (when healthy) and really like Kluber and expect a very strong year from him, potentially better than Sale - we'll see. Thor has the greatest upside of the three, and I really thought this was his year, but perhaps not. (Thor is a great example of the need for luck in fantasy baseball; after targeting him throughout the entire drafting season and rostering him in multiple DC leagues, I totally missed on him in the big drafts. If he's hurt and/or performs under expectations, it will lucky for me that I didn't draft him even though I really wanted to do so.)

Sale or Thor arguments can be legitimized by either side.
I do not believe that Syndergaard has more 'upside' however.
If anything, I believe he has a lot more downside. He has flirted with arm woes since coming into the Major Leagues.
With an organization that is becoming infamous in not keeping players on the field.
It's wonderful seeing him in full health.
But proving he can stay healthy, even over just a year's time has proved shaky at best.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Sale was my #3 too right after Scherzer. I thought the worries over Fenway were overblown and that he could be even better with something to play for this year, unlike on the South Side. Also agree on Syndergaard downside, he was behind most of the typical 3rd rounders for me like Lester, DeGrom, Archer (but still ahead of Kluber who I have as a mid-3's era type). And now a minor health warning for Synd this week ... so not sure I'd call him full health!

Sale was also my #3 behind Colon and Dickey....
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
