Brett and Baez

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu May 17, 2018 9:35 am

I was told last night, that Javier Baez hasn't walked in his last 130 at bats.
The fella that told me was a SABR-minded guy who just wanted to get a rise out of me.
It worked.
Baez is having his best fantasy season ever. He swings at everything and even connects some times.
That last sentence may seem like a slight and I'm sure that most would take it that way.
Baseball has changed.
George Brett would be prayed to five times a day by SABRS were he still playing.
And Brett was a great ball player.
But, Brett played in an era where batting average was king.
Over his career, these are his average seasonal stats for our five categories...
.305/75/15/76/9
These are positively Poseyish.

If a fly was buzzing around, bothering Baez, he would take swing after swing at the fly till finally making contact.
Brett would be more calculating in taking his swings in assuredness that he would strike the fly.
Therein lies the difference between yesteryear and today.
If this were draft season, we may be concerned about Baez k/bb ratio of 37/6
In season, it is all about the five categories.
Baez delivers.
.266/27/10/36/5
For you on pace folks, times that by four and you'll have his stats for the year.

SABR'S and Fantasy are like Democrats and Republicans.
Each side thinks they're better than the other.
Each will steal ideas from the other and claim the rights.
At the end of the day, the two have very different agendas.
SABR's believe they are helping all of baseball. The more statistics the better.
Bring on StatCast.
Bring on velo.
Bring on launch angles.
The fantasy community is more selfish.
We narrow our focus to five categories.
We don't care how we arrive at filling those five categories.
While Javier Baez gets dinged for striking out three times in a game by SABR's, Baez fantasy owners only care about the fourth at bat, a two-run single, followed by a stolen base, and a run scored.

Nowadays, one in four is good enough, IF that one is a good one.
A box score of 4-0-1-0 is not a good enough one.
The one as previously mentioned for Baez, far exceeds the strike outs in the other three at bats for Baez owners.
Baez 37/6 strike out to walk ratio offends SABR's.
Brett went through his career striking out less than he walked.
If repeating that sentence, pre-cum would be affecting most SABR's as it is read.

We live in an era where we feel as if our pitcher doesn't get almost a strike out an inning, there is something wrong.
Strike outs are here to stay.
The shame in striking out has dissipated.
Over 50 batters are averaging a strike out per game.
George Brett struck out once every three games.
Brett exuded grace and elegance in his hitting skills.
Baez approach, closer to a crash test dummy.
For baseball fans, the grace and elegance by Brett is remembered fondly.
For fantasy owners, Baez is the category filler and we don't care about the lack of grace.
Grace is not a fantasy category.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Dan has been MIA for about a month. I am concerned. Or is it that Dan has been working with the Marketing people at Frito Lay?

Come back Dan! Hope all is well...
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Agreed. Hope all is well, bud. This is quite the hiatus for you!
