Last year he was hyped ruthlessly on these very boards. This year he becomes the youngest opening day starter since Doc in '85.

ADP had him at pick 80. Is this the year he becomes the King? Or will he give his owners more of a prince like return on their investment?

Over or Under on these numbers:

16 Wins

195 K's

3.66 Era

1.24 Whip

16 Wins - try 13, maybe 14

195 K's - try 180 (his innings will still be limited)

3.66 Era - 3.50 - 3.60 sounds good

1.24 Whip - sounds about right

From a Seattle Times article:

The new Felix Hernandez — "a leaner, better version than we've seen in the past," gushed manager Mike Hargrove.

The man is ripped. The pudginess that led to worries he was morphing into another Bartolo Colon has been transformed into solid muscle.

Last year, the Mariners resolved to hold Hernandez under 200 innings, including spring training. But Bavasi indicated that they are ready to take off the restraints. Hernandez turns 21 on April 8.

"It's a different day with this boy," Bavasi said. "Last year, it was real easy to say we were going to hold him to 200 innings. If we take that approach now, you guys [the media] will probably slit my throat."

1.24 Whip - sounds about right the kid gloves are off. Hargrove and the GM HAVE to win this year or they're both gone. They will RIDE Felix to a 225 inning season

1.24 Whip I expect Seattle to be much improved this year finishing ahead of Oakland and Texas in the West.

I think the number of Wins is just about right on target (15-17).

He should reach 200+ K's if he avoids the DL, but an ERA under 4.00 would be a nice accomplishment and getting under 3.75 seems unlikely.

Like the Wins, I'd expect his WHIP to be right around the number (1.23-1.25).

So, I'd say: PUSH - OVER - OVER - PUSH... but in the final analysis he'll have a very solid season.

I pick the under. Not a curse to anyone who has him, but a strained oblique will cost him six starts mid year and forearm tighness/dead arm/sore shoulder costs him September.

Seattle finishes in the basement. Ichiro signs with a new team. Gates moves Microsoft to Iowa. Oregon annexes Mount Rainier.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

With Putz dinged and a bullpen that includes Reitsma as their setup man, he gets the under in wins for sure. In fact, I'll take the over on ERA because the bullpen will allow the inherited runners to score giving more ER's to Felix. The under on WHIP though.

As always GG was right, just hyped one year early.

Most people think Felix will be great, the tough part is predicting when. What if I hype Alex Gordon a ton this year and tell everyone to draft him early. Then he has a disappointing season but bounces back with a monster 2008. Does that mean I was correct to tout him for 2007?

Hargrove and the Mariners' brass will certainly push him in the innings department. Its more likely that he will go down with an arm injury late in the season than it is for him to pitch 225 innings. Being a Seattle homer, I hope not, but the M's have a bad track record with young arms.

[/QUOTE]GG didn't predict him to be good or great like many other fantasy "experts". He predicted an elite talent the likes of which we haven't seen since the days of Doc in '85.

Don't be angry/jealous of his proven forecasting mastery. Just listen and learn.

I heard he was in severe pain on the mound. That would be a lot worse than "tightness". Felix was a good pick, but at this point I'd be worried.
