DL Players For Week 24

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Fri Sep 14, 2007 2:17 am

Since MLB teams don't officially put players on the Disabled List in September, the NFBC added to our 2007 rules that we could manually list players who are DL eligible. If a team says this player suffered a "season ending injury" we will then designate him as DL eligible and allow teams to take that player out of their starting lineup on Friday.

This week it looks like several players qualify for a DL designation. They include:

Jeremy Bonderman

Josh Hamilton

Eric Chavez

Troy Glaus

Scott Rolen

Noah Lowry

Orlando Hudson

Willy Taveras

You will be allowed to move any of these players out of your starting lineup today and replace them with a reserve player if it still makes your lineup legal. Unfortunately, STATS can not post a DL logo next to their names as that is automatically done when MLB designates them as DL eligible. So you won't see the DL label there today, but the system will allow you to move those players out of your starting lineup.

Good luck all and we'll post a similar list next week if needed.

DL Players For Week 24

Post by Dickie V » Fri Sep 14, 2007 3:57 am

Hey Greg I am curious as who/ what is the official publication on whom gets DL'd during the month of September. Is it the Iola WI. Free Press? I feel you may have been tardy in ruling on a couple of these guys ex. O Dog, W Taveras and maybe some others. In the case of J Hamilton though, everything that I have read so far states that he is "likely done for the season". I have yet to read that he has "suffered a season ending injury". I realize that this is a very sensitive matter especially this time of year when so many of teams are battling for the Grand Prize. So I would like to know do you and Tom make the decisions or is there a official publication? thanks Dickie V

We are going online like all of you are and making the calls on these injuries. If a team states on its web site that a player is done for the season because of an injury, we are going to ask STATS to DL that player. Teams who have him in their starting lineup during the week then have the ability to move him to reserve for the weekend games. Injuries do happen during the week and we'll rule accordingly.

You are correct, we did not DL anyone last week. We will be attentive to all injuries next week and of course during the final week of play as well.

DL Players For Week 24

Chavez, Rolen & Hudson have already had surgery. Lowry hasn't played this month and his return has been reported as doubtful. Taveras and Bonderman last played last weekend and their status, as doubtful for the remainder of the season, was reported before the lineup deadline on Monday. Glaus played on Monday and it's been reported he will have surgery next week.

Hamilton was injured on Wednesday and although he won't accompany the team on it's 10-game road trip beginning today, it was reported in a Cincinnati paper today that there remains a remote chance that he will play in the final homestand.

Most of this season's controversy concerning this rule has been how slowly players are actually put on the DL by their teams and thus unable to be replaced on their NFBC rosters for the Friday through Sunday games. There have been several instances where a player injured on Wednesday was not put on the actual DL by your Friday 12 AM deadline and there status went unchanged. Why start doing this now with Hamilton?

Per the Reds website, "with just 16 games to go, all indications are that this is a season-ending injury ."

Per common sense, with the Reds out of the playoff hunt, it makes ZERO sense for them to rush Hamilton back this year.

Richard, there was no evidence to show that Hudson should have been put on the DL last week. Here's the Rototimes.com report last Friday. Remember, he got hurt on Tuesday and played on Wednesday. As of last Friday, he was expected to miss a few days. There was no way we could put him on a DL last Friday based on these reports. No way at all and it had NOTHING to do whether your team or anyone else's team had Hudson. Here's the report:

Friday, Sept. 7th:

Orlando Hudson is dealing with a torn ligament in his left thumb. He hopes to miss only a few days. "Nothing to worry about, just maybe a couple of days," he tells the Arizona Republic. Hudson injured the thumb on Tuesday night and played on Wednesday.

OK so you are using rotowire then. Rotowire states on Sept12 J. Hamilton "left Weds. game after aggravating a strained right hamstring. Nothing about a "season ending injury"!

Richard, we didn't rule on Hamilton on Wednesday. Tom and I discussed his situation yesterday afternoon and didn't make a call on this one until we saw two separate reports that showed him out for the year. The latest RotoWorld.com report states:

An MRI of Josh Hamilton's right hamstring revealed a minor strain, which will likely keep the rookie out for the remainder of the season.

On the Reds' homepage yesterday it listed:

Reds' Notes: Hamilton likely done for year.

The story goes on to say:

The 26-year-old will not make the 10-day road trip that begins Friday, and will remain in Cincinnati to do his rehabilitation. With just 16 games to go, all indications are that this is a season-ending injury.

Now, you are correct that we could have just left him alone and forced owners to eat his stats for this weekend. But this was one of the reasons we added this rule this year as teams do not put players on the DL in September. If a player gets hurt and is determined out for the rest of the year, obviously before rosters are expanded teams would DL that player. So we're doing it now for them since we can't expand our rosters.

Hamilton isn't making the 10-game road trip and appears out for the year. I'm sorry you disagree with our decision.

ok so now you are using rotoworld. What I read on rotoworld as of Sept 14 states" a mri on Josh Hamilton revealed a minor strain which will "likely" keep the rookie out for the remainder of the season". it says nothing about a "season ending injury", which your opening post stated earlier today.

Dickie, are you for real?? Let me understand this correctly. Its basically a conspiracy theory against Orlando Hudson owners? On top of that, Greg and Tom are going out of their way to favor certain owners in this contest? Are you kidding me?

Richard, I have a feeling I know why we're going round and round on this, but I'll just state that we made a decision that was influenced by what we saw on the Reds' MLB team site and acted accordingly. We checked several sites yesterday before making this decision on Hamilton and the MLB report convinced us to add him to the DL list. We knew these September decisions would be subjective and open for criticism, but when the team site says he's out for the year we believe it. Hudson did not receive the same treatment last Thursday and thus didn't land on the DL list before last weekend.

Good luck in LV1 and in the overall competition.

Gregg I have no issues with some of the guys that you DL'd. Glaus for example, we know that he is definitely done for the year, no problem. But J Hamilton is "likely" done for the season. What if and i know thats a huge what if, but what if he does return in a pinch-hitting role against the Cubs with the bases loaded 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth last game of the season with the Central Division on the line. Then what?

Then what? Then if anyone has him in their starting lineup at that point his stats count. Obviously. And if that happens, it would be 17 days after his injury. Again, MLB teams have expanded rosters and thus don't have to DL guys who get hurt in September. The NFBC doesn't have expanded rosters and that's why we added this rule.

Again, you are correct, we could have taken the safe route and not DL'd Hamilton. Hell, we could have been safer still and not even ventured into this September injury area. Better yet, we could have left the Friday injured transaction period out of the NFBC. Each rule change was adopted by me to better the game experience and help owners who suffer mid-week injuries. Each comes with controversy, but I think the upside is still there for you gamers. If I'm wrong and everyone hates the additions, we'll go back to our 2004 rules and carry on. Fine by me.

We started arguing about Hudson vs. Hamilton. Now it's the entire rule. If others want to eliminate all or part of our Friday DL rule (September and/or pre-September), I'm all ears. But I felt this went more smoothly this year and it was obviously used by many of our NFBC participants.

As I don't keep track I can't give you an example, but I'm quite sure that this rule has caused some controversy as players that we knew were going to go on the DL, were not officially added to the DL by the 12 AM deadline, and thus were not allowed to be replaced in our Friday lineups. Your standard answer has been something to the effect that you can't help it if teams don't officially DL their players for a day or two, and that if they are not on the official DL by 12 AM Friday then they can't be replaced. What makes you think that if this were another time in the season that the Reds would have acted quick enough to have DL'd Hamilton by the 12 AM deadline? Mild hamstring strains frequently do not require a DL stint.
