Unbelieveable - confirmation wanted

Post by viper » Wed Aug 25, 2004 10:14 am

I was going through all the waiver historys to more or less look for potential dead teams. I also write a column and plan to comment a bit on dead teams among other NFBC topics. These columns are in the CREAViVESPORTS free newsletter. My initial list would be all teams that have not made a recent (like in August) waiver moves. I would then look at rosters for DLed players or see if the team money was exhaisted (like Walla). Then I discovered the following amazing fact.

In league NY5, the second place team is "Team Chielli". They are also 26th overall. They have made NO (as in ZERO) waiver moves all season and their lineup currently has their first 15 drafted position players active (including one DLed player) and it has their first 9 drafted pitchers active (including 2 DLed players). It is almost like they have done nothing since the draft - i.e. it may be a dead team.

Can someone in NY5 check and see if they have, in fact, made a single move this season. Imagine a "dead' team getting 2nd in a league.

By the way for those interested:

One team has not made any waiver moves (the NY5 team)

Two teams have not made waiver moves since April

Three teams have not made waiver moves since May

Seven teams have not made waiver moves since June

Eighteen teams have not made waiver moves since July.

Viper, you are a man that researches far and wide for your columns. Good post. I can only tell you that Team Chielli has not made a move all year long and there is a reason that team is on auto pilot. It's a story for another day, like maybe after the season and nobody will make a move for that team the rest of the way. It was drafted very well by a late substitute and continues to compete with a few DL'd players in the lineup.

It would be good fodder for your column, but it will have to wait until the end of the year.

I am just grateful that I'm beating the dead team.

Hey Greg, since I was likely the first to notice this happening - or at least the first to post about it - can I get any money the team wins?

You say "NO" -- oh well, thought I would ask. How about exclusive rights for the first article about this quirk of nature.

My next several "High & Tight" column starting in September (shameless plug!) will be primarily on the NFBC. A no-trade league provides a level of draft and strategy analysis that is not available in leagues that allow trading. Because I only want to write on strategy, this league is a good one to follow. It will be even better next season with a full compliment of teams. However, this will likely be my last season writing on a regular basis so whatever I learn will be lost in space. "Danger Wil Robinson!"

I will be using the standings as of next Sunday morning and then plan to update them at season's end.

Intended columns will be on:

1. Favorable and unfavorabe drafting positions

2. Hitters .v. pitchers in first 5 or 10 picks

3. First round picks and the lessons learned

4. Dead teams - I may name some names

5. Whatever else strikes my fancy or someone in here suggests

I really have no idea who reads my stuff so maybe I can say things that are not sugar-coated. Since I don't figure to write again next year, I figure I am sort of free to say what I please. It is also good that the three funded CREATiVESPORTS teams are doing very well with two in line for some type of cashing - not mine however but that is another story.

Hey Viper - I found out the real story about 5-6 weeks ago because Chielli is in my league and I was fighting with him (and still am, really) for league positioning, etc. I went to crack open some analysis work and was dumbfounded when I saw what I saw.

It doesn't make any real difference, but the story is amazing and I'm sure papa Greg will share it sometime down the road. I'm going to honor his confidentiality request... but it's funky to say the least!

It would make a good article IMHO - ;)

Alas, the totally dead team in NY5 finshed 4th, 1/2 point out of third. Not a bad finish for a corpse. They also were 55th overall, one spot ahead of my team. I would contratulate them but I do not know what cemetary to go to.

I would love to hear the whole story on this team.

Ok Greg, you said that you would give us the scoop after the season ended. Last time I checked, the 2004 season is completed.

Greg, when do we get to hear the story behind this team that was on "auto-pilot" for all of 2004??

I gave as much information out as I'd like on another thread. I'll let Viper copy and paste it here. Mr. Chielli is no longer an NFBC member, and officially he wasn't one in 2004!
