Cubs - are they this good?

Post by Liquidhippo » Thu May 29, 2008 6:09 am

Anyone else surprised the Cubbies have the best record in baseball? Yes, they can hit, they've got Zambrano, and a decent bullpen, but their 2-5 starters look shaky to me. Can they really keep this up?

KJ - aren't you a Cubs fan? Will this continue? Or will they slip back to .500 in due time?

the cubs do not have a " decent bullpen" they have a great bullpen. the teams that have guys to pitch the 7th 8th and 9th are almost all doing real well ( yankees being a big exception). to me- that is the key. cubs division should all regress together- so the cubs could play .500 from here out and still win- because if their 3,4,5 are shakey- look at the rest of the centrals 3,4,5. you gotta like the cards- if carpenter comes back- and if ingy or franklin can man the closer role because perez looks like a stud for 8th inning.

Cubs need Rich Hill back to fill one of those (#2 thru #5) pitching slots and no its not because I own Rich Hill and need his stats. In all seriousnees, Rich Hill and a trade before deadline will boost that pitching staff; but, for the time being they are doing a great job as a whole.

I'm not sure the Cubs are this good, I just think that there are alot of very average teams in the National League.

As a result, I do love the Cubs chances of getting to the World Series this year...they have to make it one of these years right.. :D

KJ - aren't you a Cubs fan? Will this continue? Or will they slip back to .500 in due time? They should win the division. I never was a Pinella fan, being that he was a Yankee or AL-whatever guy, but watching him everyday now I'm impressed. He seems to get the most out of his players and he knows when and where to make moves.

I think they will win 95+ games and should be the odds-on favorite to be playing in the World Series. Their greatest attribute right now are their 8th-9th inning pitchers. Wood has become the dominating closer I'd hoped for, he'll be even better over the full year than his stats shows now. Marmol may be the team MVP thus far, but is being using so much I'm concerned with how he'll be pitching in October. But if he and Zambrano stay healthy I don't think anyone can stop them.
