Keith Voight Is Week 1 Winner

Post by Tom Kessenich » Mon Apr 13, 2009 5:34 am

Congratulations to Keith Voight, whose Moussie Goose team in Las Vegas 4 led the way in the NFBC last week with 3,719.5 points.

A huge week from Miguel Cabrera (.520-3-10) led the way. Brandon Inge (.304-4-7), Robinson Cano (.409-1-4) and Nick Markakis (.364-1-7) also had big weeks. On the mound, Erik Bedard, Jake Peavy and Aaron Harang combined for three wins and 44 Ks while Heath Bell and George Sherrill combined for five saves.

Congratulations again to Keith and good luck to everyone in the NFBC this week.

Keith Voight did not enter his NFBC draft with a master plan for how he was going to topple the competition in Las Vegas League 4. He preferred to keep things simple and let the draft dictate how he would proceed.

So far so good.

A huge week from Miguel Cabrera (.520-3-10) led the way as Voight's Moussie Goose team paced the NFBC field in Week 1 with 3,719.5 points.

"Going into the draft, I really wanted a Top 4 pick and I ended up with No. 5 instead," Voight said. "I had a hard time deciding between (Grady) Sizemore and Cabrera but ultimately felt like Cabrera was the more solid of the two.

"My draft was pretty much dictated by what palyers fell to me. I wasn't planning on taking a pitcher until Round 7 or 8 but when Peavy fell to me in Round 5 I felt like his value was too great to pass on. It's only Week 1 so I'm not getting too excited about the early success but it is nice to win my first week after three years in this tournament."

Voight also credited his two draft prep friends - Kyle Borth and Chris Dalzell - for helping the team get off to a strong start. The 31-year-old Voight lives in Portland, Maine where he owns a small cafe and bake shop with his fiance.

In past years we always listed the Top 20 in the main event on the NFBC home page along with the top two finishers in all of our NFBC leagues. With the site redesign, STATS is going to have to come up with a new look to get these standings accessible to even non-NFBC members. I've asked them to try and figure this out so that everyone can see the Top 20 teams each day in the main event and the Online Championship.

I always felt that was a badge of honor to make the front page Top 20 and hopefully we can get that done soon. Seeing the top two teams in each league was also very cool and we'll try to get that done, even though we now have almost 160 NFBC leagues to list. Stay tuned.

One other note: We will have a Weekly Prize for all main event weekly winners. As everyone knows, in past years Upper Deck Authenticated sponsored our Weekly Prizes and the items were sometimes incredibly valuable, in the thousands of dollars. Working with UDA was great, but over the last five years they did not see a sales increase from this promotion and in tough times had to make some cutbacks. This was one of them.

We've reached out to other sports collectibles companies to fill the void and provide weekly prizes, but right now times are tough all around. We provided MLB replica jerseys last year and we're talking with that company right now about continuing that prize. We still are ordering our NFFC winner jerseys now, so unfortunately we have to get that done first.

I will have a Weekly Prize for the main event and hope to announce it soon. Just hang tight for a bit Keith and congrats on a great Week 1. We'll get a prize out to you and the next 25 weekly winners in the main event and will announce the item as soon as we can finalize it with one of our partners in the sports collectibles industry.

We're trying, trust me, we are. ;)

Not sure if I posted this already, but I was impressed with the free jersey last season, and knew (like you said) if there wasn't a connection of sales promotion-to-increased sales...the promotion would end.

I wanted to give my step father a 49er authentic customized jersey for Christmas, (he's an old timer now, and wanted his old racing number from when he was a kid racing cars...and his team name from our fantasy football home league named after his old camping trailer)...I shopped around...and decided to go with FansEdge out of loyalty to their nice NFBC promo.

The quality was awesome, and it was his favorite gift!

~Lance Awesome Lance. Yeah, Dallas Jones wore his Rockies jersey that he won in the NFBC Weekly Contest last year to the Las Vegas draft and it was really cool to see. When I saw that I thought the same promotion would work again this year. We're talking with those guys now to see if we can do that again, but we're also talking with some other memorabilia companies to see if we can get some autographed mini-helmets. It's a tough time for all industry companies, so we'll see what happens.

But your story is a good one and will help us as we finalize this deal for this baseball season.

First, Congrats to Keith. We have never met, but even winning a week in this event is quite an accomplishment.

Second, other ideas for Krause In-House Prizes:

Win a week, win a Mustache - Greg will shave his and send it to you.

Win a week with access to Tom's little black book (single particpants only). Alternative prize for the female contestants, win a Tom "Farah" style poster.

Win a week, win the "Hat" formerly used to pick draft slots.

Win a week, win a five-gallon bucket of Iola Wisconsin Snow (100% organic).

On second thought, I think I would prefer to wait for Greg to work something better out! :D

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
