Entirely? Well, no, but not for the reason you suggest. His K/9 and BB/9 demonstrate that at least now, he is healthy and not affected by the increased workload. I believe these concerns will be greater as the season progresses.

I did have some concern that last season, his skills jumped up pretty significantly, and that he might struggle maintaining those elevated levels, which in fact is the case. That said, his peripherals are still excellent and portend a turnaround once the hit rate corrects.

and if you think i keep players longer than i should, i guess you aren't aware that i cut bait on lyon, gomez and milledge sooner than a lot of their owners.

buck up to the main event next year crazy. it will be fun to watch how well you handle everything.

PSS: Has anyone ever done a statistical study on pitching stats compared to which ump is calling the game. Some umps have a strike zone the size of a beebee and some the Grand Canyon. Kazmir is a mixed bag.

He has been EXTREMELY unlucky with respect to BABIP. It is about .350 in spite of a normal LD%. It is interesting to note that he is inducing way more GB than normal, but the Ray defense is good so that should not be an issue.

So the good news is the hit rate should regress.

However...

His K/9 is way down, his already high BB/9 is up. This is supported by a 2mph drop in velocity on both is fastball and slider. And curiously, he is throwing considerably more sliders than last season.

There is data that displays ball movement, but I am not adept at interpreting that. Sometimes a drop in velocity with more movement is advantageous, but the K and BB rates suggest this is not happening.

There is a chance all the "lucky" hits are altering his approach, so the thing to hang your hat on is that should correct and we can then tell if that was the issue.

But the concern is the drop in mph and declining peripherals are independent of the extra hits so even when that corrects, he will still not be the guy expected.

Plus the anecdotal analysis could be if he were really truly an upper-echelon guy, he would be able to overcome the lucky hits.

I remember quite a few people being somewhat high on Kazmir to start the season and I couldn't understand why. I know about the K's and the good numbers, but if you've ever watched the guy pitch, you would want to avoid. I was "all over him" 3 years ago and to a lesser extent 2 years ago, but not now, no way. Like I felt towards Baldelli, I'm hoping the Rays trade him before he loses value. They already received a nice return for V.Zambrano....why not benefit from it even more?

Even though he is young, I don't think he will ever develop the way people think. When it takes 30+ pitches to get out of the 1st inning, a player is going to have problems. He walks way to many batters and never displays control and worst of all, he lets everything bother him as he's pitching. Maybe if he had the forgetful/bulldog attitude, I might believe in him, but until then, he's only a "praying for the potential to be realized" player.

Joe Blanton's doing a decent Saberhagen impression thus far with the Even/Odd Year Splits:

2004: 0-0 5.63 1.00 6K 8IP

2005: 12-12 3.53 1.22 116K 201IP

2006: 16-12 4.82 1.54 107K 194IP

2007: 14-10 3.95 1.22 140K 230IP

2008: 9-12 4.69 1.40 111K 198IP

If the trend holds, 2009 should be a productive year! :D

I liked Blanton enough to draft him and disliked him enough to drop him.

Top 10 list of things most people don't know about Joe Blanton:

-----------------------------------------------

10. His Math teachers name was Mr. Zola

9. His favorite food is cereal. His bowl is modeled after Jethroe Bodine's.

8. His mom, Mable, is the lunch lady at his former school. Turkey gravy, rolls, and hair nets played a big part in his life.

7. Joe once threw a ball 120 mph, he was in a corvette.

6. Hamels and Myers call the line drive %, the Blanton %

5. More beer is sold at Blanton-started games than any other Phils pitcher.

4. During interleague play, Joe shows Ryan Howard where all the buffets are located in American League towns.

3. After Blanton left, they replaced the well-dented outfield fence in Oakland.

2. On a campaign to save his name, he offered Shawn Childs $500 to bid on him during the next faab period.

1. Joe thinks k/9 is a dog and bb is Barnacle Bill.

There were over 150 Blanton owners in the NFBC (live events, online championship and satellites) as of early April.

Come June, there may be only one...
