Just a thread available for comments about rumored or completed deals.

The Holliday for St Louis prospects including Brett Wallace makes alot of sense. The player batting behind Albert Pujols this year has hit .229 and bb's will be a twice a game habit for Pujols unless he gets some protection.

Glaus' step backward in rehab may hurry this deal along.

Others to be probably traded:

Y Escobar, Huff, N Johnson, W Harris, and any other Nat over 25 years of age, save Dunn.

Every Pirate is on the block. I'm of the opinion that Halladay doesen't get moved. A nickname for JP Ricciardi is Gip.

Cleveland could trade Shoppach and Garko. And if they get an offer for Kerry Wood that pays most of his salary, I don't see them turning it down.

Arizona is looking to trade all vets.

San Diego can get alot for Heath Bell.

I wouldn't be surprised if Aardsma and/or a starting pitcher is dealt from Seattle too.

With the A.L. Central tightening up, now is the time of year when White Sox G.M. Ken Williams makes a bold deal.

Could the Mets actually be sellers this year?

Well the Indians made another trade today sending Rafael Bentancourt to the Rockies for 23 year old RHP Connor Graham. He's a big (6'7" projectable pitcher with a nice strikeout rate).

I think you are on the money when it comes to Garko and Wood. Laporta has been playing 1st base almost exclusively at AAA and the Tribe HAS to give him playing time over the last two months. Also, Andy Marte (yes, that Andy Marte) is hitting over .300 at AAA and the Indians almost have to give him one more chance to see if he can be more than a AAAA player.

I am not sold on the fact that the Indians are going to trade Cliff Lee - but a TB package with Jake McGee and maybe SS Tim Beckham would be tough for the Indians to pass up.

I also honestly think the Indians would love to dump J Peralta - he has reportedly been a real distraction in the clubhouse this season. The Indians are loaded with 3B candidates in Wes Hodges and Beau Mills and I truly think if they can rid themselves of Peralta for an arm they will.

For as much talk as there is regarding Victor and Cliff Lee, I don't see a deal getting done... Shapiro almost never makes trades of top players unless it's the year before they become free agents... unless someone ponies up some big prospects/players, Shapiro won't feel pressured to make any moves... with regards to Shoppach, Garko, Wood, and Pavano it's another story though...

Ryan, 2 things

1. The players being discussed with the Rays are supposedly Wade Davis and Reid Brignac... no way they trade Beckham.. McGee underwent Tommyjohn surgery last July... personally I'd want more for Cliff Lee than Davis/Brignac... I'm not sold on Brignac yet and Davis will probably be a solid 3rd starter, but likely nothing more... I'd want a potential ace/2nd starter for Lee

2. Neither Wes Hodges nor Beau Mills is a 3rd base candidate... Hodges is a butcher on defense and Mills has a shoulder problem that prevents him from making it as a 3rd baseman... they are both basically future 1B/DH, and Hodges' future is likely with another team...

Alot of teams are just looking to shed salary. Cleveland has three players making 10 million or more. Westbrook and Hafner are untradeable. They could deal Wood.

That leaves sheddable salary in the form of Martinez and Lee. The prospects are nice, but not the number one priority for some teams.

geez- i want to see the team that thinks wood can hit. in the 3 years i have been back following baseball one of the things i have concluded is those 3a stats for hitters out west are really inflated. almost all of the hitters hit about .400 in minors and about .200 in majors. arizona, california, nevada etc. when i play golf the ball moves less and goes farther. it is also harder to see while in the air. i have to believe those 3 things apply to baseballs. just inflates the hitters stats imho.

The Holliday deal has gone through.

A good deal for the Cards pennant hopes. A good deal for Oakland.

Taking Holliday completely out of the picture, the A's traded Huston Street, Carlos Gonzalez, and Greg Smith for Brett Wallace and Mortenson. I like the Rockies side of the deal right now. We'll see later how Wallace develops.

Anyone care to speculate on whether Wallace gets the call up to the big leagues? Or who will get more PT in the OF with them shipping holliday out? an OF of hairston, sweeney, and r davis?

Two or three weeks ago, Nick Johnson and Aubrey Huff were considered gone from Baltimore and Washington. Surely, a team with more money would be taking these guys off their hands.

But something has happened to the teams that have money. Maybe it's the economy, maybe it's less people going through the gates. Whatever it is, the teams with money seemed to have wised up.

Why should they pay an aging Huff his 8 million salary for underproducing? Should they pay Johnson's 5.5 million and wait for his pane of glass body to be a pain in the ass body on their payroll?

Lets turn our attention to the two teams with the most money to spend. The Red Sox chose Adam LaRoche to be their insurance policy in case Mike Lowell's hip can't make it down the stretch. It's not enough.

The Yankees drove a dagger through Red Sox Nation when they signed Mark Teixeira. Turning the tables, the Yankees playing Swisher at 1b, while the Red Sox playing Teixeira most likely would have the Red Sox in first place. The Red Sox have to bolster themselves offensively. Their hand has been forced and LaRoche, Johnson, and Huff are like Kia's in a Corvette showroom. The Red Sox need a Victor Martinez or Adrian Gonlalez. Ownership knows both players can be had. It's a matter of giving away the right prospects and using cash to appease Cleveland or San Diego. Gonzalez, in particular, would be a great player for the Red Sox. Ellsbury, Drew, and Ortiz have provided little left handed pop for the Sox this year. Gonzalez has a great Fenway swing and with major league hitters again surrounding him in a lineup, his numbers could go Gonzo.

The C.C. and A.J. signings are deals that will haunt the Yankees in future years, but they are getting bang for their buck this year and the Teixeira signing puts them ahead of the Red Sox offensively.

The Yankees won the free agent battle. The Red Sox, with arguably the best management in baseball have four days to even the score.

Sure, he's great, but starting pitching is not what they need. Gonzo would be nice but I don't see it happening, although the Sox and Padres do have a long history of orchestrating trades. I like the idea of V-Mart more as he could take over behind the plate as soon as Tek accepts a coaching job somewhere. Neither can throw out a baserunner any better than my four year old however.

I wonder at times if the Sox-Halladay rumors are just that and meant to drive up the price for other suitors.

just a question- does it really matter if they win the division? i wonder if texas is the worry. if they think they can still win the wild card- then the hitting might not matter. in fact, the thing the sox and yankees might need is someone to throw out the angels baserunners. either way should be fun -beckett and lester vs cc and burnett. if it goes to last game- as long as he is healthy i still like beckett.

Tampa is the greater worry over Texas. Even though Texas remains just two games behind them, they still look like that big hotel in Vegas. The Mirage. The Rays are only four games behind the Red Sox. To this point, only Niemann has outpitched expectations. If the rest of their staff catches fire, Tampa could be tough to stop.

Once in the playoffs, if it is Boston and New York, I would also give the edge to Boston. Beckett/Lester/Smoltz/Buchholz over Sabathia/Burnett/Pettitte/Chamberlain.

Boston's bullpen is stronger, but not by nearly as much as people would think. As of now the Yankees have more offense.

The Yankees are in this position even with turning the best set-up guy in baseball into an average starter and a potential 20-win starter to a set-up guy. The Yankees front office always finds ways to even up their monetary advantage.

A personal observation. While watching the Red Sox, they have had that Yankee 'stuffiness' to them this year. Nobody is getting excited about anything.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have been more demonstrative and on the top step of the dugout rooting for players. To me, it shows the Yankees are getting hungry again, while the Sox have taken the old Yankee 'been there, done that' model to another level.

Maybe the Red Sox should trade for another 'idiot' to get their motors started again.

Single A Pitcher Scott Barnes and a PTBNL were the take for Garko.

The Mariners have traded for Jack Wilson and now traded away Jarrod Washburn.

Buyers a couple of days ago, sellers now?
