Ahhh.... these nights on the west coast are so terribly lonesome. One would think I'd use this time to catch up on current events, reorganize my closet, blow dry my hair or maybe even watch a few old episodes of Full House... but all I do is sit in front of my computer and press the Refresh button over and over and over again, knowing full well that everyone has already turned in for the evening.
I must say I've enjoyed this so far. Been fun posting a lot of my favorite baseball cards (still trying to figure out a way to fit Jerome Walton on the squad, by the way) and witnessing the friendly banter and watching Gekko enforce the pace with his "up, on deck, in the hole" messages. Always the highlight of my day. And definitely interested to hear everybody's thoughts on this when it's all said and done, what their strategy was coming in and how it all played out, where it all went awry, amok or askew. Maybe I'll even post my pre-draft top 25 and we can all have a good laugh (at me, or with me, it's no matter).
Should probably get some sleep... got to get up early and post my pick. Don't want to hold this draft up any more than I already have.
G'night to all of you not reading this...

Brian, I feel your West Coast pain! The East-West thing is always a big problem with slow drafts. NFBC should think about having West Coast and East Coast slow drafts! By the way, thanks again for helping me out last weekend when I was out of town.

Maybe I'm being a little ambitious, but is it a stretch to think that maybe we could get this thing done today??

I remember this guy from my first AL Auction. Reminds me of how I used to get the stats/standings updates once a week... via fax... oh the torture!

A little bit of a monkey wrench, I will be starting jury duty on Monday.
Some birthday present!
I don't know what that entails as yet.
I'll let you guys know sometime Monday, if this draft is still in progress

Glad to help out last weekend and certainly good to chat with you for a few minutes, although looking at the standings I'm starting to wonder if there should have been more static on the line. "I'm sorry... you're saying Maris 1960, right?"

We bought a house in 1990. The mortgage gal's name was Diane Hornsby.
I had to ask if she was related to Rogers.
She looked at me all excited and said, "No, but I am related to Bruce Hornsby, he's the guy that had the big hit, 'The way it is', exciting isn't it?"
When she saw the look on my face she said, "You don't like Bruce Hornsby?"
I said, "He's ok, he just never hit .424, that's all."
Fastest mortgage signing process ever.

Since we are in the catcher run………………………Ted Simmons
Ted was drafted right out of high school in the 1st round of the 1967 amateur draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his debut one year later on Sept 21, 1968.
In his first game, Ted started behind the plate and hit 7th against Claude Osteen and the LA Dodgers in Dodger Stadium. In his first AB he struck out looking. He got his first major league hit three innings later with a single to right. He finished his first game 1 for 3 with a walk.
Simmons played in 2 games in ’68 and 5 more in 1969, it wasn’t until May 30 of 1970 when he became the full time catcher of the Cardinals. To start the 1970 season, the Cardinals had Dick Allen at third and Joe Torre behind the plate, but with poor production from the first base spot and with the trade of Phil Gagliano; the Cardinals moved Allen to first, Torre to third and brought up Simmons to catch. He would be the Cardinals starting catcher for the next 10 years.
Ted hit 248 home runs, that puts him 10th on the list of players that played the catcher position. His first homer was 6/7/70 against Roberto Rodriguez. His last one was 7/2/88 against Bryn Smith in Montreal.
The team he hit the most homers off was the Cubs (23), and the pitcher he tagged the most was Steve Carlton (7). I guess having caught Carlton for a couple of seasons helped to know what he threw.
Ted is 2nd
on the RBI list for catchers with 1389, he trails only Yogi Berra.
Ted is 2nd
on the hits list for catchers with 2472, he trails only Ivan Rodriguez. The 2472 hits is 83rd all-time for all hitters.
He is 9th in cumulative Wins Above Replacement (WAR) for catchers.
He was an 8 time Allstar and he received MVP votes in 7 different seasons.
He was on the HOF ballot for the first time in 1994 and got just 3.7% of the vote. Since that is less than the 5% needed to stay on the ballot, he was dropped off the next year. Last December under the HOF’s new veterans committee, Ted was on the short list covering the period 1973-Present. He did not receive enough votes to get in. Only Pat Gillick was inducted by the veterans committee. ( Joe Morgan
and the Vet Comm is an entire different subject that I could rant on about
. But I’ll wait to see what they do this December with the “Golden Era” ballot of ’47-’72. Santo, Minoso, Kaat, Tiant and others are on the list)

My memories of Ted Simmons as a Brewer.....seeing him caught on camera smoking several times and the fact that he always looked like he was stoned.

I knew I wanted to go pitching here. However with needs in wins, saves, K's, and with WHIP such a competitive category, I didn't feel I could run with a standard wins based starter or saves based reliever for one of my last remaining pitching slots.
Surprisingly, there's only been seven pitchers in history with 9 or more wins AND saves, over 100 K's, and a WHIP under 1.00 in history. Only two of them are still available, each who benefits different specific categories a little more than the other. One provides significantly more saves and a better ERA, the other a couple more wins, many more K's, and most importantly in my choice here, a better WHIP. That's who I'll run with here. That pitcher.....
Tom Hughes 1915
W - 16
S - 9
ERA - 2.12
WHIP - 0.94
K - 171
IP - 280.1
By the way, from the looks of that swing was there any doubt he was a pitcher?

I'll let you guys know sometime Monday, if this draft is still in progress Should it be necessary I will be glad to sub for Dan for the processing of the last round picks.....and now I am neither WC or EC as AZ has too much daylight to save.

PVH [/QUOTE]I know he was taken.
Thanks for keeping an eye out on us
When he was picked I made a comment about him being an under-rated catcher and that people should reevaluate his HOF credentials. I just wanted to follow that up with some info. I've also done this for several other players taken during the draft.
