I remember I forked over $125 for a Kerry Wood Bowman Chrome back in '98 or so. I now use it as a candle holder!
I rarely buy graded cards that are post 1980. I do have some, just not many.
There are just too many copies of each card out there. I just buy the sets each year and sometimes I try to piece together sub-sets that interest me.
When I buy graded, I stick with pre-1980 cards and I usually go with a PSA 8 or sometimes 9. Two things; the price is much more affordable and I personally think the 8’s and 9’s return a more constant and reliable rate of return. 8’s and 9’s usually represent a known value because there are enough to create a steady market, 10’s are sometimes so rare that the price can fluctuate wildly based on how many people need that card at that time.
