Strasburg Ball/Card

Post by Ando » Sat Jul 31, 2010 4:03 am

I'm still not really proficient on these boards. Still can't figure out how to copy and paste in bold among other things. When Strasburg went on the DL one of the first things that came to my mind was that baseball someone posted on the boards (or was it a baseball card - heck, I forget already!)

Sooo, I looked through the past topics and still couldn't locate that thread. Can someone help me out on that? I'm dying to know what that thing went for (I guess I need to be reminded what is WAS first of all!).

I remember it was selling for $16,000 at the time I looked at it. I'm sure it went for more than that. I would imagine the winning bidder has not eaten well the past couple of days! :D

There was a Topps card (I believe a Superfactor) in May that ended around $16k. Then another Topps Bowman card in June that surpassed $30k.

Thanks Whipsaw. Some sleepless nights for those folks! :D I remember I forked over $125 for a Kerry Wood Bowman Chrome back in '98 or so. I now use it as a candle holder!

Nice writeup. Good luck the rest of the way; the finish line is in sight!

Government attorney, eh? I have to admit that one of the first things that crossed my mind is that you need to hire Gekko! He would serve our country well in that capacity! This is his 'in'. :D

Mark, up for a career change? :D

Again, good luck. I imagine people with numerous teams Sunday will be a busy day with all this trade activity. I only field 1 Main Event team and I anticipate spending a considerable amount of time on it tomorrow.

I rarely buy graded cards that are post 1980. I do have some, just not many.

There are just too many copies of each card out there. I just buy the sets each year and sometimes I try to piece together sub-sets that interest me.

When I buy graded, I stick with pre-1980 cards and I usually go with a PSA 8 or sometimes 9. Two things; the price is much more affordable and I personally think the 8’s and 9’s return a more constant and reliable rate of return. 8’s and 9’s usually represent a known value because there are enough to create a steady market, 10’s are sometimes so rare that the price can fluctuate wildly based on how many people need that card at that time.

I think you are writing about the 2010 Bowman card. I know it was on e-bay, but there was a bunch of bogus bids and it was removed off the site after it it a million dollars. I actually took a picture of it with my cell to send to my buddies (if you want it, send your number or e-mail to my message box).

I agree with the statement from Naval Lint...they make way to many cards these days. I also prefer the older cards.

I did buy a couple boxes of the 2010 Bowman cards, because they are hard to find. There is also a lot to learn about baseball cards these days. You can buy a box of those cards from Wal-Mart, Target...etc, but you will never get one of those auto Strasburg cards, because they only come in a hobby box. Those boxes at your local stores are called retail boxes. It's just crazy how baseball cards have turned into a business.

Blah...Blah...blah...I am sure this was boring.
