I emailed it to you. By the way, good choice in Pedro pics. I'm surprised you didn't grab one of his Mets seasons for your team.

Greg was chomping at the bit, and now has strangely gone silent. I guess ARod was going to be his pick too. Back to the drawing board...

And by mentioning are "we" up, he is likely working with a co-manager. Likely was ready to pounce on A-Rod, but now has to double check what they want to do

Steve Carlton, Phillies, 1972 There is an article I read somewhere that detailed Lefty's BATTING prowess in '72. Guy was UNBELIEVABLE. I shudder to think of the Phils record that yr w/out him.
Might have been about 1977 (.268-3-15), also a CY year for lefty. His 1972 hitting was pretty unspectacular... .197- 1hr- 8rbi
I WILL find that article. It detailed all of Lefty's AB's in the 27 gms he won. Obviously he was an outstanding pitcher, but the gist of the article was w/out him as a HITTER the Phils would've been lost in those 27 gms.
Probably not needed, but nice to see stats on the bbs for those non-participants who might be following along. One thing you will want to point out is if baseball-reference has any differences from the stats Dave might be posting. I know Todd used fangraphs, and most of the differences were on the old-timers stats, but a couple we did find for more modern players were RBI for Roger Maris 1961 (141 vs. 142) and Runs for Willie Wilson 1980 (133 vs. 132). Don't know if Dave is using fangraphs too, but B-R is our official source, so--- heads up!

Good afternoon gentleman, sorry I was missing all day. I was at the car dealer having some work done. A three hour job turned into just over five hours.

GEKKO gave me the news that I had the first pick. This is the first time since I’ve been in the NFBC that I actually got the number 1 spot in the draft.

In the first All-Time draft, I had pick 9. With that pick I took 1965 Sandy Koufax, passing on 1968 Bob Gibson. So now with the number one pick in this draft, I could take either one of the two again. I provided a detailed review of my first four picks to the last draft here. Navel Lint Review. I explained why I took Koufax.

I really thought long about taking Sandy again here with the first pick but decided to go with Gibson, let’s see how it works out this time. Although I do feel somewhat relieved to see that Koufax went #2.

1968 Bob Gibson

W-22

S-0

ERA-1.12

WHiP- 0.853

K-268

P.S. I’m now against the idea of 3RR. :D ;)

Read? Haha. David, I've found the group of roto-nerds that hang out here to be a very highly intelligent bunch. As reflected by their love of BASEBALL! :D

OK, while Glenn's recovering from seeing a MET snatched right before his pick, and looking for a good picture for his own selection....

Anyone want to bet it'll be another MET? I think it might be.

Anyone want to bet it'll be another MET? I think it might be. Going into this draft my KDS was 1, then 10-15, then 9-2. I thought Gibson was far and away the best choice out there, but after him I thought it would depend on the flow of the draft. I therefore headed towards the rear so I could get an idea of the flow of this draft before I had to make a choice. Seeing so much focus on hitting early is somewhat different from the first draft and had me thinking that would be the direction I'd go. However once ARod was picked, I started leaning towards pitching. When Piazza was picked, it was assured. The question remaining was which pitcher to build my team around.

There were several pitchers considered including a couple Mets, but for anyone who paid attention to the last draft, I'm going to prove here that I haven't learned my lesson.

In the first round of that first draft, I bypassed the ratio edges provided by Alexander to go with the perceived edge in wins that Chesbro gave. Not so great a decision. Wins became an afterthought for most drafters and the ratios, especially WHIP became a huge factor in the standings.

I don't believe that will or can be duplicated in this draft. With the insane pitching seasons of the early 1900's no longer on the table, there won't be enough great WHIP and ERA seasons to go around. With the huge 300 and 400 inning seasons also now limited, packing your roster with relievers will be a lot less viable a strategy.

Therefore I believe a "useful" edge can be obtained in this draft in wins. Therefore I will once again grab the pitcher who provides the most wins in the player pool (though 10 less in this draft), but at least a couple more than any other pitcher in the pool. The fact that he also has the 7th best WHIP available of any pitcher with 16 or more wins and one that comes 336 innings strong is just icing.

The season.....1968. The pitcher.....

Denny McLain 1968

W - 31

ERA - 1.96

WHIP - 0.90

K - 280

S - 0

INN - 336

OK, I'm late.....gotta run.

I took this guy in the last draft as well, and Glenn I was not taking McClain so you did not steal my pick although I assume you and I will steal each others picks many times.

In the last draft I took him in a different year but in this draft with not nearly as many high batting average years with the 1900 to 1940 years gone I feel this year is more beneficial.

Ted Williams 1941 OF
