I'm up for either.
Greg - no way to run it online until there is a site that can really handle it. Get it scheduled for next year and I am IN.

Auctions work just fine via chat rooms, but I'd much rather do a live event, and if we target '09 this will give STATS a year of running a keeper under these rules to work the kinks out.
I'll try to get an early start on this for '09, beginning in the second half of this season while everyone is still paying attention to baseball so we can get it filled way ahead of time. We've already got 4, and probably more from those that hoped to be in it for '08.

Sorry, but for a league of this caliber and magnitude, I want a live draft and not doing it in the blind via a chatroom.

You had better draft your ass of year number one of a keeper league...or you'll be donating for 3 years plus!
My experience of keepers are all negative.
Lopsided trades (thank goodness not allowed here).
Weak teams giving up.
Top teams after year number one having a major advantage on year two and beyond.
I don't know how these leagues exist...other than the crazy die hards who can't wait 3 weeks more for their fantasy fill...oh, wait.
I've yet to see one with a 5 year span with no team leaving.
Trying to replace a team is horrible...due to most of the teams leaving are the worst ones.
Headache after headache from a commish standpoint.
Have fun!

If anyone wants to join a private keeper league run by KJDuke that has each member owning an NL only and an AL only franchise, I am looking for a parner to handle the National League side of things. The NL auction is March 22. if intersted, shoot me an e-mail or PM and I can give you the details. The keepers are OK -- Holliday and haren leading the list.

Let me continue...feeling pretty good, John!
Here are more beefs with keeper leagues.
Say you have 12 to 15 teams of similar skill set.
WHY ON EARTH would your put you man-love of certain payers (and your ability to keep them close to your heart)
above the ability to re-draft JUST IN CASE your team drafted in "year number one" busts...or your speedster pulls a hammy, or your COL slugger gets traded to LA...or whatever?
The bottom teams after year #1 will be bottom teams after year #2 and year #3 unless you reward the weak with built in rules to assist the crap teams (which is also unfair.)
These same 12-15 teams would have much more league balance by re-drafting each year...yet the ego's or man crushes on players has them donating to the stud teams who draft well year #1...period.
I've been there. I don't see the top 3 teams turning over much...the top three to five teams just flip flop positions each year...and the rest donate like idiots...where in a re-draft...you can learn and draft better each year.
...and if it's one of the bogus keeper league where you only keep 3 players...why bother?
Wooohoooooooo!

~Lance Most of the above hasn't been true of my lge of NFBC guys Lance - no repeat winners in the first two seasons, last yr's winners are not clear favorites this season, and after this season a huge amount of talent will turn over because contracts cant be extended beyond 3 yrs and there is no trading.
Just have to get the right set of rules in place, which after playing these lges for awhile, I think have for this lge and for the NFBC keeper based on this rule set ... keep hatin' on 'em and you'll just miss all the fun.

very good points... It's most certainly not for all, and it should not be expected to be... The key is in he rules as you stated here.
I run lifetime point W/L leagues. You keep all. 10% turnover every year and I auction them off and don't start new leagues until they have all sold. A formula that has worked since 1990.
As Lance was posting away, I rec'd an e-mail from a local roto keeper league I'm starting my 5th year with. They have great rules. 7 keepers max. Min keep is at $10. Anyone acquired via trade or FA can't be kept the next year, and you can keep for only two years. Lots of fun, no bogus trades.
Bag on them all you want Lance. There are many that enjoy the ups and the downs over he years...

Very good, gentlemen!
Dr. Jekyll, here. (Mr. Hyde will be back late tonight!
)
I'll agree that strict and just rules could help a lot in a keeper league. (I'd bet it took many years of lesser rules to evolve to where you are...and I most likely played under rules I didn't agree with.)
I may also have a bias against them, as THIS was my team (Finished 1st place, with potential to dominate for 3 years or more easily...but we wanted to expand ownership, so I agreed to redraft the following year, and open up from 10 teams to 12...thus sacrificing what took me a few years to create after only ONE championship!!!)
2001, mind you...with many of these players in their prime or pre-prime!!!

For the categories we used...dominant.
But, I'll concede that under a no-trade league (my biggest beef by far)...and controlled/inflated keeper values, and some more tweaks...could be better than when I played.
But I'll still bet the bottom 5 teams after this season will still be out of the money in 2009! (Where that would be much less predictable in a re-draft league.)

Lance, one of the best things about a keeper for me is that once you realize your team won't be competing in a given season - whether that is April 1st or mid-August - you still have something to play for (unlike a re-draft lge) - you can get to work on setting yourself up for future seasons with FAAB, while other teams toil away bidding on 37 yr-old soft-tossers they hope can snag them 3 more wins to put them over the top.

Lance,
A 15 team NFBC league with a 30 man roster using all 30 major league teams will most assuredly guarantee 8 pretty nice protects.
15 experienced NFBC owners will smooth out the talent and the lack of trading will prevent a wealth of talent moving from l team to another.
This should eliminate any skeletal teams that if need a new home, show enough meat on the ribs to make for an attractive investment !
