Week 5 - Gekko Jeopardy

Post by Gordon Gekko » Mon Jan 15, 2007 11:55 pm

Each week I will pick the poster with the best response (as judged by Gekko) to my question. After ten weeks is up, I (or Greg) am going to put each weekly winner's name on a piece of paper, throw them into a hat, and pick an overall winner AT RANDOM. The overall winner will win free entry into the Web Content Panel Draft in March where the format is winner-take-all for a $500 NFBC credit.

Week 1

Question = This player has the best chance to be the 2007 NFBC version of fantasy football’s LaDainian Tomlinson. In other words, this player has the best chance at dominating all other fantasy players and carrying the most NFBC teams into “money” finishes.

Winners = EliGrimmett (Matt Holliday) & duggan (Alfonso Soriano)

Week 2

Question = In 2006 this player hit 15 or less homeruns in the major leagues. In 2007 he hit over 30 homeruns.

Winner = EliGrimmett (Kevin Kouzmanoff)

Week 3

Question = This pitcher never had 20 wins in a season until 2007.

Winners = headhunters (Ervin Santana) & poopy tooth (Jason Schmidt)

Week 4

Question = This player led the Major Leagues in RBI's in 2007.

Winners = poopy tooth (David Ortiz)

Week 5 Question ...This pitcher racked up the most saves for any pitcher who wasn't their team's closer on Opening Day 2007.

Message Board posters: In your opinion who is this player and why?

B.Lidge for the Boston Red Sox. He has a 1 year deal with Hou, a capable closer behind him in Wheeler and has a short leash going into the season. The chances of them running away and hiding in the NL Central are slim (improved Cubs and weakened starting pitching) so after a handful of blown saves hou will find him expendable. Boston will have closer problems until they trade for someone since they wont put Papelbon back there. It'll be close but Lidge will nail down 21 saves for boston (who they'll receive in june) barely edging out the rest of the field.

I think Quahogs is on the right track, as far as a trade affecting the closer's role.

I have a different closer though. When Armando Benitez is traded, it will open the closer spot in San Fran's bullpen.

They have one decent pitcher in the bullpen. Kevin Correia gave up 64 hits in 69.2 IP. His strikeout total was low for a closer (57 in 69.2) but it is serviceable. He did only give up 22 walks and just 5 HR's, so the long ball won't hurt him.

His BB/9 has gone from 4.74 to 4.78 to 2.84. His HR total fell from 12 to 5 in 10+ more IP.

He also increased his K/9...6.63 to 6.79 to 7.36.

Each year 30 to 50% of closers lose their jobs either to injury or ineffectiveness. The media scrutiny can cause permanent damage to the psyche of even the best closers. Correia has something else that others don't. The human media shield...Barry Bonds.

Who is Akinori Otsuka?

The Rangers are rolling the dice on Eric Gagne this season, and have been wise (thus far) to hang onto Otsuka. I'll give Gagne until mid-May to get hurt again, which will move Otsuka into the coveted closer role. He should total at least 25 saves by season's end.

Bank on it.

Broxton. He's being groomed as a closer and posseses "the stuff" it takes. Saito will do his best to keep the CL title, but as with all far east pitchers, the league will figure him out the 2nd go-around, opening the door for Broxton.

Soriano and Torres are possibilities as well.

Who is Jason Isringhausen?

He would be the closer if he isn't on the DL for a little bit to start the season but the older you get, the slower you heal. The Cards have a capable fill in for Izzy in Wainwright so they won't have any reason to rush Izzy back in before he's ready. When he is ready, though, the Cards will choose to bring back their proven commodity, thus giving Izzy 25-30 saves on the year.

Thanks,

The Mudster

Marty I didn't realize that Francisco Cordero isn't going into 2007 as the Brewers closer.

Thanks for the Week 5 props, GG. However, please give the ping pong ball to someone else -- I'm already a participant in the draft.
