Just like Gordon from yesterday

spare me 2 things

1) back to back starting pitchers that early- got it

2) I told Gordon Chavez was a bad pick when he made it- Giles was not only a terrible pick in hindsight- he was a terrible pick on draft day that I blew too.

The thing I find it interesting is I got the first 3 picks right- found great value a couple of times Holliday, Nomar, AJP, Estrada, Patterson

and got 2 great players in the last 7 picks Putz and Crede. Still only an above avg team shows you how hard it is to do well here.

1 15 Carlos Beltran CF Ambrosious's Mustache

2 1 Chase Utley 2B Ambrosious's Mustache

3 15 Chris Carpenter SP Ambrosious's Mustache

4 1 Rich Harden SP Ambrosious's Mustache

5 15 Matt Holliday LF Ambrosious's Mustache

6 1 Julio Lugo SS Ambrosious's Mustache

7 15 Brian Giles RF Ambrosious's Mustache

8 1 Eddie Guardado CL Ambrosious's Mustache

9 15 Shea Hillenbrand 1B Ambrosious's Mustache

10 1 Mike Gonzalez CL Ambrosious's Mustache

11 15 Dan Haren SP Ambrosious's Mustache

12 1 Nomar Garciaparra 1B Ambrosious's Mustache

13 15 Lyle Overbay 1B Ambrosious's Mustache

14 1 A.J. Pierzynski C Ambrosious's Mustache

15 15 Corey Patterson CF Ambrosious's Mustache

16 1 Casey Kotchman 1B Ambrosious's Mustache

17 15 Odalis Perez SP Ambrosious's Mustache

18 1 Johnny Estrada C Ambrosious's Mustache

19 15 Jae Seo SP Ambrosious's Mustache

20 1 Trot Nixon RF Ambrosious's Mustache

21 15 Dan Miceli CL Ambrosious's Mustache

22 1 Brandon McCarthy MR Ambrosious's Mustache

23 15 Joe Crede 3B Ambrosious's Mustache

24 1 Sergio Mitre SP Ambrosious's Mustache

25 15 Aaron Hill 2B Ambrosious's Mustache

26 1 Scott Williamson MR Ambrosious's Mustache

27 15 Jay Payton LF Ambrosious's Mustache

28 1 Guillermo Mota MR Ambrosious's Mustache

29 15 J.J. Putz CL Ambrosious's Mustache

30 1 Sidney Ponson SP Ambrosious's Mustache

you had alot of things right. It's hard to figure where it stumbled. The two reasons you give + this maybe ...

you had 2 closers by rd 10. They should have been better choices. If they were you wouldnt have felt compelled to chase more towards the end. I understand the JJ Putz handcuff but why so many others too ? If they ALL became closers you would win saves by 50. You cant trade them. Keep grabbing the O and SP instead. Some of those picks could have been Cuddyer, E.Byrnes, Youkilis, B.Arroyo, F.Thomas...

I favor the accumulation of many good sp's instead of the ace theory. What happened to Harden is 1 of the reasons why. I did have an ace last year and will likely have one again this year. The reason is who's available in certain rounds. Last year the guys I wanted in round 5 were gone so I took Halladay. This year in round ? I don't like the usual hitters, so I might as well get the sp I want. Otherwise I think you can wait. When you start taking them I do like to get several. This minimizes the injury factor. Face it these guys go down at a very high rate. I also think you dodged a bullet since Guardado was your first rp taken. Ganzalez in the 1th was great. He went much higher in my league and of course Putz was genious. So you must've ended up fine. I like the spreading of sb's too. Some from lots so you didn't have to take an sb specialist. I wanted Patterson in 15, unfortunatly he was long gone. So, I would say more sp depth taken in the early teen rounds. Ace not necesary. Closer earlier in place of an sp pick unless you think you can identify another Putz late.

I thought it was a great team when I saw your draft before the season started.

A solid foundation and theory but it falls apart with pitchers not meeting your expectations. I wouldn't change anything in regards to strategy.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

I am sure a few of you like me have newbies private messaging you with questions. The thing I have stressed this year that I missed last year and you all are reminding me of is you have to get depth in starting pitching.

Sure there are starters out there that will help you- but they are simply replacing who you were wrong with or who got hurt- not who you did not draft.

We all should not get lulled to sleep either not many seasons have true impact starters on waivers like Hamels and Jered Weaver. Plus look at the mocks people have wised up and Hughes, Bailey (have you seen how handsome he is), and J Sanchez are going in every draft.

I think a novice would look at that team and say well if Harden stayed healthy everything would have been fine- it would have been better maybe creaping in to the money but not fine because the depth was so poor.

For those of you who know my partner (I am solo this year) ran pitching let me be clear this poor strategy on pitching was one I supported and helped hash out 100%- so definitely my bad too.

How could I have not seen Brian Giles was a bad pick that day-

I also like the advice from Q on chasing so many spec closers- sounds like a great idea but you have a great point at what the opportunity cost is with that.

Don't beat yourself up too much over Giles. I took him in two of my three drafts, once at 8.05 and the other time at 8.08. I thought he was a low-risk guy good for 290-20-10 numbers. Oh, well. At least I got my other 8th round pick right when I selected...Brad Wilkerson.

Maybe I should get a partner.

Chest,

If I were you I would not have 15 first in your KDS. :D

But I'd say, get yourself back in the middle of the draft, where you can play off the ebb and flow of the draft. This is where you knowledge of ADP's will really play to your strengths. That was your biggest strength in 05. If you can sit around a couple of clowns, that helps too.

Taking five out of first eleven picks for pitchers is putting a lot of strain on your offense, so

A) they had better be the right ones; and

B) you can't take as many injury prone players or those who might lose (or not get their jobs)

Chest,I played against you in 2006.You earned my respect as a roto player. It is so hard to look at the draft of one team and judge it without the context of the whole draft.Every draft is a different animal.

Guardado your 1st closer at 34 i dont like , i know he's done the job in the past , but his age and body scare me.

Hillenbrand in the 9th looks high , i went back and checked out the Ultimate and he went 12th round pick 9.

Harden is just bad luck, just like Matsui.

Just a couple things i noticed a year later.
