Papelbon back to closing again

Post by Big Fish » Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:16 am

Thank the roto gods for this move. I needed it for relief.

Pabelbon, Borowski, Broxton, Tankersly for relief

Dice K, Kazmir, Haren, Pettite, Robertson, Blanton to start

I drafted Pabelbon hoping he would eventually close.

The very reason he was a starter was to prevent injury. Now that issue comes back and Papelbon may not even make it through August.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

True.....but they will use him smarter this year. Hey with the 11th round pick up I'll take 30-35 saves with a solid whip and era and that should be a lay up.

GG - you're pegged Papelbon I hope you're equally right about Sosa. I grabbed him in the 20th round of my draft.

We intentionally took him as our first SP in the 8th as we weren't willing to spend the pick necessary in our league for a huge closer. It was very clear to us that at somepoint he would be the closer, we didn't think it would be this fast.

Glad BJ has a friend on our team . We do have a smal SP problem, but as others have noted, SP is the easiest thing to fix.

As always, better to bhe lucky than than good!

Let's not discount the little extra value this gives Schilling, Matsuzaka, Beckett...you got figure this saves a few blown saves and a win or two for one or more of these guys...

Papbelbon went to high for me in both leagues, in the main he went round 7 pick 6 right in front of me.I then went Haren , and would have if pap was there.

In the ULTIMATE he went in the 6th round pick 2, thats to high again for him as a starter.

As a starter he comes with more risk, but closing they will be able to take better care of him.

took Clemens in the 16th and Pedro in the 26th..i knew i may need them before but now...I may have to start to pray There are a few decent SP out there for us, Jared, in Tampa #1. The rest of your team is solid and Saito could be pushed by Broxton before the end of the year. Could be a blessing in disguise, especially the second half if you get Clemens AND Pedro.

Eddie,

I saw you drooling for Papalbon in the 7th round, your foot was tapping and your body was swaying like the former pitching coach in Atlanta(Lee Mazzili)-- also your son said " you want to take Papalbon next?" Had to grab him the pick before you -- Thanks!

Sincerely,

The guy picking before you.

As a leaguemate though I am happy Papelbon was on your team because you would have beaten me and a lot of other guys in saves even without him.

Sure you need one more starter but now you are only fielding 6 starters week in/ week out rather than 7 so there is a bright side.

I am with Wayne- not a big Saito guy but he should give you enough saves to guarantee at least a 14, I would say a 15 but Staples loaded up on some closers that will make him tough in saves if they pan out.

Saves are going to be interesting in our league. Six of us have only one established closer with 10 closers tied up on three teams and two MLB teams undecided. FUN, FUN, FUN!

Go Kevin Gregg- hey every season has a mediocre pitcher get 25 saves why can't it not be ole Kevin Gregg.

Wayne- I shared the nice words you said about my wife with her. Being pregnant she obviously does not feel very pretty every day- that made her smile. You are a good fella- a good fella who reached on Freddy Sanchez but still a good fella

[/QUOTE]Man did I reach on Freddy Sanchez! What the hell was I drinking...actually, my dear friends next to me at #11 picked Coco Crisp (I really wanted his 25-30 SB) and for some DA reason I got rattled. He'll be ok in the 2B spot but WAY TOO EARLY!

Tell your wife for me that a woman is never so beautiful as when she is expecting...and here is a fathers prayer for ten fingers, ten toes, two eyes and a nose!

He smiled and pointed out what I should have known that you will fret over the kid every day for the rest of your life.

Did I steal your player anywhere in the draft- I really was expecting Bay in round 2 and you took him. I was happy to get Jeter where I got him, but that also eliminated Young from me in round 3, I will not fill my middle infield slot that early.

I had targeted Adrian Gonzalez, Duffy, Gregg, and Iwamura about the times that you pulled the trigger on them. Gonzalez probably hurt the worst because I think I am weak at 1B which is a key power position.

Other than that, we were kind of building our teams with slightly different flavors. Still think Glaus in the tenth was key for you.

Outside of Maddux, did I ding you coming back any?

Outside of Maddux, did I ding you coming back any? I guess I had a pipe dream about Oswalt in the 4th and he at least made it to within 3 picks of me. You have some guys I like but would have never gotten because you take them in spots that they would have had to make it 20 something more picks to get to me.

I got a little greedy waiting for Iwamura and got a little lucky, but I wish I would have pulled the trigger on Inge 2 rounds earlier. I could survive his avg and needed the couple extra homeruns he should give over Iwamura.

Funny you like the Glaus pick- I did too relative to where I got him which looks like about 2 rounds later than most. But about a third of the negative feedback I have gotten has been about him. I have never owned him in a money league but round 10 and a little light on power with avg to give he made sense. We will soon see...

BTW I liked your Youklis pick- if you are going to be weak at 1b he is the best of the weak options IMO.

If the "Greek God of Walks" gets about 120 Runs (doable though I have him projected at 90-100), he will be a steal. The ADP (corrupted, so I do not know if this is correct) says I got him later than any other league. Could be the best pick of what may generally be a weak drafting effort.

I think I said this at the draft, so forgive me if I am being redundant, but at some point in time during the year, Glaus will get on an incredible hot streak. Everyone hates the .250 BA. However, if it is around the All-Star Break or after when he gets hot, you will look up one day and see he is hitting around .270 or .280. Put his butt on the pine at that time and play one of your reserves! He will go through an incredible cold streak and you can watch for signs of him working out of it. I misread the situation last year and stuck with him too long. I will say that the difference between last years .251 BA and a .280 BA for him is only about 15 hits over the course of 540 AB and six months. So he can be managed. If you can miss one of his cold spells, he is GOLDEN.

Glaus is a guy every year when he gets hot I say why do I hate him so much and then that cold streak comes...
